They need love too :)

I'm currently growing cultivars 'Purpureus Variegata`, 'Lucy', 'sugar tip', 'Danica', a pure white cultivar that's over 25 years old name unknown, and I found a variegated seedling I hope to make more plants from.

We have Rose of Sharon growing everywhere here. No idea on the cultivars but lots of different shades of pinks and purples and blooming at a time when not a lot else is.

In my perennial garden, I keep them cut back to about 3 feet and they are a beautiful blooming shrub. In other areas of the property, I leave them alone and they can grow as high as 10 feet.

Love Rose of Sharon Thumbs up

I keep mine between 4-5 feet, they bloom more on new wood so once a year pruning produces more flowers, as well as keeping them look nice. I've had them tall and they produced mostly small flowers and the leaves didn't look good so once I pruned and fertilized they looked great.

Here are some photos. You'll see my Variegated seedling, which when mature will be able to pollinate others and produce seed, most variegated cultivars are sterile so this natural one is special. The other photo is of 'Danica' cultivar, one photo shows a flower within a flower (youll see white in white/pink flower), the other photo of normal danica flower, its my favorite ROS cultivar!

It blooms on new wood. That explains why all of my flowers are at the tips of tall thin branches. I'm in zone 8a. Do you all think that it's too late to prune and fertilize my ROS? It's a double lavender, in full sun, and we get plenty of moisture here (especially during August) with high humidity.

I prune mine in spring right as buds start to grow. I think you can fertilize a little to boost it for next year. Fertilize right as buds open next year and about every 2 weeks until you have flowers. Keep well watered!

Update on my seedling, it's a little over a foot and growing fast. It survived the Winter. Funny trait, the leaves start green and gain the variegation as they mature, really might be something valuable I've found!
