Hello to all you daylily addicts. I can hear your snickers. Yes, I have been downsizing. I had sold over 150 older cultivars but then you know that feeling. I wanted some thing new in the garden. I couldn't hardly believe that I
had added almost 50 new ones from the LA and Doris Bishop ATP sale. Here is a look at my new Display bed.

I can hardly wait to see new blooms. I planted all spiders in the back and shorter ones in the front. My center showcase plant is Isabelle Rose. I am so excited to get these in the ground. Our weather has been awesome this week! How is your Fall planting going?

I just love the cooler weather, pumpkins, apple cider, Fall Festivals etc.

This was fun too, I went to Nashville's Great Pumpkin Run. This is my daughter Ashton and her friend Serena. They did the competitive division.

I will miss my little hummingbirds over the winter. It is almost time for them to leave. I only had one at the feeders today. Angry

Goodness that is a lot of land, Teresa. Are you cutting back from 10 acres of daylilies to four acres?
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Good morning, Gleni. We only have 5 acres at this location. I feel very blessed to live outside of the city. I did leave for a brief time and loved many things about city living, but I returned out here. I grew up on a grain/cattle farm. We still have that too. I am a true country girl.

One of the canola fields. I just love it when they turn bright yellow!

The new bed looks very nice Teresa! Our hummers are gone now and the geese have been flying overhead, several large "V" formations a day.
The weather has been pretty good here for the past 2 weeks, chilly mornings with warm afternoons and I'm gaining on finishing up the garden work for this year. Planted 4 plants that arrived along with the potted ones on the deck 2 weeks ago and I'm still moving/rearranging beds and plants as I go along cleaning beds. Downsized a bit too, I've tossed 30 - 50 cv's that just do not bloom enough to justify the space they take up in the garden. The empty spots are full already ... with the potted plants and others being moved from my bed behind the house...guess we'll see how I did on the downsizing when I update the plant list for this year in a few weeks.

Thank you, we have had cool mornings but it is still getting to the lower 80s. The pumpkin is at mom's house. We have the veggie garden over there. She lives about 25 miles from me on the farm. I am taking her to her heart doc today. Just for a ckup, she will be 88 on Oct 1st.

Mom has fed hummers for as long as I can remember. She has had up to a dozen but not this yr.

I still have a few hummers but most have left. Kansas City Kicker and Jamaican Music are still blooming and I have 2 other with scapes if frost does not get them. I hope they get to bloom. I just ordered Heartbeat of Heaven Lovey dubby and I think that will be the last one I put in the ground this fall. I planted several new ones this fall;
Lori Goldston
Rainbow Frost

Robes for the Queen

Frieda Allen Jarrell
Tranquil Waters
God Save the Queen
Jennifer Trimmer
Clothed in Glory
Alna Pride

That Canola field picture sure got my attention. I'm a "burb" girl and had no idea how pretty the flowers were on Canola. Could you use the plant as an ornamental in the garden? Just curious.........Maryl

Caroline, fall is a good time as long as the daylilies are planted at least a month before a hard frost. They need some settling in time.

Yes, we just finished putting 16 new daylilies in the ground. Here in our 8a zone, this is a great time to plant. The daylilies have time to establish themselves, and they are all set to go when next year's bloom season rolls around. We did take out quite a few older DLS and more may go next year, too. Love everyone's pictures, Fall is usually a beautiful time of year. We still have hummingbirds here, but we have had a number of migrating ones coming through, so we know that cold weather is just around the corner. Our "resident hummers" usually hang out here until the middle of October. That picture of the canola field is lovely, it is the first time I have ever seen the plant and I didn't know it bloomed so beautifully.

I still have seeds sprouting and little guys getting ready to go in the ground.
But I think this is it.
Then I'm working on hauling compost from local farms and saving to get a super effective rust spray.

(Wouldn't you know that NOID TET produced pods every time with seeds that sprout like crazy.
Also set bunches of prolifs....
Wish my more expensive recognized plants would have done as well.)

Does it ever fail ? The noid do so well! Today, I have contacted a local person to trade Stella de Ore and Big Blue Monkey grass for mulch and western soil amendment. They have opened a store beside their mulch company and sell to landscapers and the public. This will be a good outlet for me to move those plants and have excess to their good products. It is a win, win for me.

The canola is pretty but has a very pungent smell when blooming. It also gets over 3 ft the blooms are small too. They just look pretty in mass.

Theresa, I have Abiding Goddess blooming a buds on Clothed in Glory. Today, I picked up my order from Herbie Phelps. I am so excited to be adding several of his plants.

I also stopped in today at Wild Bird and purchased a clear cover bird feeder that will hold my meal worms. The bluebirds just love those. They don't come to the seed feeders. I have had at least 3 broods of bluebirds this year. I hate to see summer come to a close. Our hummingbirds will be leaving in a few weeks.

Thanks Teresa for the information on Canola (also called Rapeseed from what I gather). From what you've said I can see why it's not suitable for garden use. However, one never knows where one will find inspiration for the garden so thanks for including the picture.......Maryl
