Amazing growth.

Very good growth on those nice healthy looking seedlings. What size are those beds from side to side?

Thanks for the comments.
The beds are 54" wide x 60' long. In a couple of months you will not be able to see the center pipe except on the ends of the beds.

They really bulk up fast for you, Fred. I'd have to plant in May to get growth anywhere near that.
What's your labeling system? PVC stakes with venetian blind slats?

Your correct about the labeling system Ken, I have used it for many years. If we continue to have a normal winter the seedlings will start blooming late April.

Have you stopped feeding yours all together for the winter, or do you feed them a little still. Mine start out like yours, but then I get behind real quick. I just dont get enough sun, I know it, but will continue. The blooms I do get make me so happy.

I had all the names come off my blinds this past year. For all my new ones this year, I just used a label and stuck it on the blinds. I used alot of plastic knives this year too. I also do just a simple mapping on paper, seems every year I find a new way to loose the names. I have no idea why the animals like to dig them up so much...o well.

I am using Paw Paw's stainless steel with zinc coated metal plates. I have gone back to using pencil to write the labels. Plastic knives are great but they get targeted by critters who like to pluck and toss them. The thing to watch is that your pencil is actually made of graphite. Some pencils, whatever they are composed of, react with the galvanizing, which was a bit of a shock to me.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

I feed them all winter with a 25-5-10 liquid fertilizer or something similar, I spray them once a week as a foliage feed. I mix it 8oz to 15 gal.

The mini blinds are the most reliable and economical thing I have come up with if you write on them with something that the sun will not fade. Glen is correct about a #2 graphite, the writing will stay on the blinds many years. When ever I want to write a seedling cross and the stats on a blind, I use a #2 pencil, anything else is to large. When I first plant the seedlings they only have a # so I use a black Painters Pen. Both the #2 pencil and Painters Pen can be found at Wal-Mart. I use the metal markers with Brothers P Touch Labels for all registered plants. White with black letters last forever.

How much freezing weather can those seedlings take?

If it gets in the teens it will burn them some, we were down to *21 a few days ago and it did not effect the seedlings. The cold effects the older plants more than the babies because of the amount of foliage that frost can cover. Frost is what burns not the cold tempts, until it gets in the teens and stays for several days like last winter. You should have no problem blooming seedlings in one year if you get them in the ground before Sept. 15, I will see 75 to 80% of these bloom in 2015. One other thing, I do not mulch anything here, I want the ground to warm back up fast after a cold spell to start growth again, the mulch slows the warming.

When might the first of those seedlings bloom next year and when might the seedling bloom peak?

As daylily seedlings grow, new leaves become visible (in the centre of the fan) every few days. Once the fan starts to build its scape there is a delay in producing the next new leaf. Then some daylilies start to produce new leaves again and the scape becomes visible but others do not produce any new leaves for some time while the scape is being produced.

Have you noticed whether your seedlings stop producing new leaves at any time before their scapes become visible? When they produce their first scapes are they usually still one fan or do they typically have multiple fans?

My smallest seedling made it thru the cold spell, I was so happy. I had put it out, the only small one, because I didnt want to baby it inside. Fred was right..the bigger plants were the one dropping..altho not hurt.

I sprayed mine, like Fred mentioned the other day, they are just kinda sitting there. I need some more action, and with this warm weather , I hope it makes them happy.

My seedlings always start blooming before more other plants. Ill be interested Fred observation on the leaves. Im gunna start watching mine.

Here first year seedlings can bloom anytime from April till Sept, I don't believe there is a peak bloom the first year. The second year is when the preform like mature daylilies and will peak around mid May like the other daylilies here.

I have never paid any attention to the leaves, these seedlings are 8" apart and by the time they start to scape they are so thick I can hardly see the scape's until they are above the foliage (leaves). Most will be more than one fan (2-3) again this is something I pay little attention to at first bloom. I want to know the fan count after rebloom if I choose that seedling to move and look at another year. If it doesn't rebloom it doesn't get moved to the hybridizing area.

Those seedlings look awesome!

Mine have been in the ground much longer and don't look nearly that size. Lousy soil here and I probably don't fertilize enough. Makes me want to dig up my seedlings, amend my soil again, replant, and fertilize! LOL!

I wonder if it is too late in the season to do that .....?
