First plant to bloom at my house this year is one of last years' clearance plants. Turns out to be a duplicate color, but if I didn't like it to begin with, I wouldn't already have some from previous years.

(S. truncata)

Well you know me I love to mix. I combined my favorite because it seems to always be on life support. It does not grow well at all. It is staying small.

Adam, I agree, TY! Schlumbergera truncata = Thanksgiving cactus.

Cinta, that's gorgeous! I'd love to find that color. I have some mixed up pots of them too, hopefully they'll provide some good pics soon!

Wow, y'all have blooms on your Holiday Cactus already? I noticed buds on my big plant a couple of days ago but it always seems to take forever for them to open, usually early to mid December. This is my Schlumbergera truncata last December 15th:

Lin I had one bloomed really early this year, it bloomed Sept. I had it in the shade and I think we started getting dark earlier this year. I have heard it is the number of hrs of light they get is what brings on the blooms. The earlier it gets dark the sooner they bloom Previous years I had buds in Sept and blooms late Nov early Dec. This year they are at least a month ahead.

I had one for two years that bloomed three times, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and around Easter. It was huge and that pretty deep bright pink you see most often. I just can't keep them alive long. Guess I water too much or not enough. After it blooms, the ends of the plant shrivel up and drop off. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am new to this web site and love it. Looking forward to getting to know ya'll. Yep, I'm from East Texas but I love anyone anywhere who loves plants. Rabid Gardener

You should be able to find the answer to your question on one of these sites, Rabidgardener:

The little white plant at the other end of this planter is starting to open some blooms

Rabidgardener: What type of potting medium do you have them planted in? Do you change the soil when you purchase the plants or just leave them in the original pot with the original soil? I've found that most wholesale nurseries plant in a very dense, water retentive soil which does not allow enough air circulation around the roots of the plants; that dense soil also retains too much water which can cause root rot. A nurseryman once told me the reason for the heavy soil is because of the amount of time some plants will be sitting on shelves at the garden centers without employees watering them. I see the opposite of that at garden centers here, the plants get watered too often and without proper drainage many are almost to the point of floating in water. We had more than 5 inches of rain one day last week and the next day I was at one of our big box stores and noticed an employee in the garden center watering plants that were already saturated from so much rain.

My holiday cactus are kept one the dry side but I repot every plant I get into a chunky, well draining medium and the plants are kept on my screened porch year-round where it's quite humid.

Looks like last years' clearance plants didn't provide any blooms I didn't already have, but I'm absolutely glad to have more of any good thing.

The last different kind of this years' season (of S. truncata, @ my house) is fully open today, the best goes last I guess!:

All these beautiful blooms! Lovey dubby

I think I have a bud on one but the other three show no interest in blooming. The largest one I have has never bloomed in the three years I've had it. I had it out all summer and gave it fresh homemade compost and it grew like crazy but as far as blooms i'm hopeful every winter but .... Sighing!
I've been reading a bunch of the posts here and have tried covering, limiting water, leaving them alone but I haven't figured out how to get them to bloom.
Tarev seeing yours bloom so late makes me feel maybe it's gonna happen.

I notice it wants to be deprived of some watering and with the change of daylight, it later on responds by making buds..that's how I see it. I do not do any hiding in the closet thing for it.but I did refrain from watering around early Fall. Then as winter came, I saw some buds forming..that's when I slowly give it more water.

Today it is my salmon peach colored Schlumbergera showing up Smiling I have it sharing a container with that other pinkish white schlumbergera.

Thanks Angela Big Grin You know, I do not worry anymore if it does not bloom on time during Thanksgiving or Christmas..these plants will bloom whenever it wants. Sometimes the blooms go on and off up to Easter. So it is really like a multi holiday blooming cacti, and I like that...more bloom show to enjoy Big Grin
