I will have some Fernleaf Peonies to sell probably sometime in April. I haven't come up with pricing yet, I first wanted to see if there would be any interest. Most nurseries sell a tuber with one flower stem for $25-$35. I would be cheaper of course!

I've never seen the white. The single pink one I have was really set back when I moved it four years ago, I doubt I'll ever divide it because it doesn't like to be disturbed.

Let me know if you're interested in the single red! Would probably sell a single stem tuber for $10, they average around $25 at the nursery. Let me know!

Anyone interested in a fern leaf should jump onto this offer. It would be nice to have verification of its exact species but a fern leaf is a fern leaf for all practical purposes. I just checked my normal source, Hidden Springs Flower Farm, and they have sold out of their double red already. True fernies are as scarce as hen's teeth.

I was not joking about scarce fern leaf peonies. Klehm's Song Sparrow has the double red for $60. I paid $45 last year for one from HSFF. Single red was $28.99 in 2009.

Unless there is a special reason for an early dig, they should not be disturbed until the leaves die, usually in or about July. This gives time for new roots to mature. I have dug early but it is best to wait.

I do not know how many divisions you are going to sell, but I would like to take 3 of them. July divisions sounds acurate to me. Just let me know if this is still on and where to send money and how much you expect the postage to be.

As sad as it sounds at the last HPS sale there were several fern leafs that did not sell. They were priced between $15 and $25 which probably made people think they be hybrids. There should be a sale this fall but since I had to stop participating because of Hubby's health problems I do not have any current information.

That is why I purchased a species single and a species double from a known, essentially guaranteed source. As time goes and with the possibility of division, I wanted a documented record. I had plenty of singles and doubles but they were from unknown pedigrees.

Most of the HPS fernleafs were donated by Leon and a couple of other members The rest were from Heritage. So we knew what they were and the members had grown them for a couple of years. Leon even donated a pink that no one took. I need to check to see if the sale is still on for this year.

A pink fernie is supposed to be rare. I think I read somewhere they are a mutation of the red P.tenuifolia. They are referred to as P.tenuifolia 'Rosea' although there is at least one hybrid which has pink flowers. I would gladly pay $50 for a true pink fernie and am surprised they all did not sell well.

Just out of curiosity, I checked Spring Hill's online catalog for a fern leaf. They have a double red P.tenuifolia 'Rubra Plena' for $49.99. About 10 years ago, I ordered the same one for $29.99 and that is how I obtained my single red. Beware of mail order offers unless they are from recognized major peony growers. Not to say they are all to be treated with suspicion but do not take offers at face value. For me, the singles multiply much faster than the doubles so they are more available to be sold to the unsuspecting and it can take two years for them to bloom in order to tell the difference. The foliage is almost identical.

I obtained mine from a property we bought down the road. The family had run a nursery from this property and had several clumps planted in the yard. I'm afraid I don't know the name of it. I do have a pink one but will not divide that one. I moved it about four years ago and it is still recovering. I came across it by accident, it was being sold by a nursery and they must have had it mislabeled. It is a beauty!

That is not a fern leaf but a hybrid mix of a fernie and another type. It is nonetheless a unique and beautiful plant. I think I have seen one like it offered by a major nursery. I will try to find the name of the plant. The fernie will always have very finely divided leaves much like our local 'wild carrot' weeds.

'Little Red Gem' looks very close to your pink.

Speaking of fern leaf prices, Klehm's has a P.tenuifolia 'Rubra Plena', a double red, for $60. There are variations in naming the double red, some use 'Rubra Plena', 'Flore Plena' or 'Rubra Flore Plena'. Klehm's are listed as 14" high which matches my heirloom doubles but some of the double reds say 20" or more. Not enough to worry about unless one has plans to sell them.
