I love the title for this new thread, it came from DavidofDeLand.
I can't wait to see what 2015 will bring to all the container enthusiasts. Hurray!

Let your mind and heart fly. http://garden.org/thread/view_...

I already have an idea for a container that Greg @gg5 gave me last year. I am going to plant the wonderful sedum that Connie @pardalinum gave me this last spring, and the beautiful Mesembryanthemum that Julia @springcolor gave me this last spring. I have both in my little sun room for the winter. They are growing well. I will post photos of the different components later today.

Mesembryanthemum had to look that one up. Hilarious! Then I remembered with the pictures in the data base. Can't wait to see what you do with those Lynn.

I've been collecting old leather purses & boots to do hanging gardens. If the weather stays as nice as it has been, I may get a couple put together in the next couple weeks. Can always hang them in the GH when it gets cold.

Something to keep in mind... when you overwinter tender succulents such as Mesembryanthemum inside, you probably should gradually harden them off again in the spring. That is my plan for dealing with a large container of Mezoo and Delosperma 'Garnet' that I have inside next to one of my light tables. There are very healthy looking but quite obviously a bit flacid too. I wouldn't want to shock them come spring.

Good idea Connie, thank you for the heads up.

Julia, the aptenia (Mesembryantheum) has really grown nice long stems. What is the best way to take cuttings and get them started? Right now I have them draped over the top of the container.

I love this wall type hanging planter from Greg. Lovey dubby

I think you can just take a cutting and put in water or when you plant out in the spring I bet you could lay a stem over soil and it would root. Then snip from the mother plant.

I have had better luck rooting aptenia in slightly damp soil than in water. I haven't tried air layering like Julia describes. I might try that method too. I don't know what the deal is with directly in water... maybe it is just TOO much water Hilarious! .

I let my cuttings air dry for a day or two (don't recall exactly) to let the cut callous.

What fun! I actually did use an old pair of leather boots once and it was so cool for a year. By the second year it was,..Hmmmmmmm,.....well just Goot-een-schlimey Sticking tongue out should I say. Oh I scrubbed it a little and it didn't get so gross that it disentegrated till the next year! It had a good run and would do it again. Like the Purse idea. Vinyl would be longlasting, like those old basket weavey boxes from the 60's.

I'll bet the boots and purses would really last in the more arid and dry climes that a lot of you live in...

Looking forward to seeing your Boutique hanging garden Jean. Find one of those old huge lycra girdles and sew up the legs. Fill with dirt and add some solid bra straps to hang and plant!!! Hilarious! Thumbs up

Jean I can almost see them in my mind, all hanging or sitting along that fence. How many of them will you need?

No specific amount..................just want to add interest to the fence line. And I have a lot of fence to play with!!! Originally I was going to paint a mural but DH balked at that idea - too permanent. At least these containers can be moved & rearranged & removed when they rot away or plants die.

Yes!

Hey Jean. What if we try soaking some of those type things in a thinner wash of the concrete after soaking the shoes and other objects in water for a day and draining overnight? With a few more thin layers painted on in the next day or two, we might achieve something like that German man or woman who did those cool ghost clothes..................Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Smiling We would want to drill the drain holes in the bottom first I think.....
