The first three things I thought of when thinking daylilies and the letter "B" were....

Below Zero. The temp here this morning is -12f. When I first started growing daylilies I used to worry all winter about how they were doing, would they return and grow the next season or would the cold temperatures do them in. Over the years I've stopped worrying. Snow is a good insulator protecting the daylilies even in these deep cold temps and while some of them may not return there are other factors that might have influenced their inability to regrow in the spring.

Second thing I thought of was Branching and all the different ways we describe it. Rebloom can be unpredictable in my garden and varies year to year with the different cultivars so branching is important to me...more branching = more buds. There are various ways to describe branching with 3 way and 4 way appearing to be the most common. Lateral, "V, "W", wide, are a few of the other descriptions also used.

The third was Bugs. The cute bugs... we see lounging on the petals or in the throat and can't resist taking an image of.

I think of birds, they have a habit of "depositing" on my daylily blooms. I have sparrows which nest under the eaves in my house, seemingly dozens of families! Could be worse, at least it's not crows!

"B" makes me think of bud builders. I can't find a picture now, but Raspberry Wine really extended its season with a bud building scape. Totally unexpected!

Bud Count!! I would like to see what daylilies have tremendous bud count. It seems hybridizers are really focusing on that in recent years not matter what form or color they are looking for.

Branching - Just look at the branching on this picture of Hakuna Matata taken by TreeClimber. So glad I bought this last year.

My daylily term for "B" will be Blue, and I am really not a big fan of the so called blue daylilies, maybe one day, but as far as I am concerned they are still a long way from blue.

B can also be for bonus/gift plants from sellers over the years I have received a number of them, some of them have proven to be keepers. I don't expect these plants but always appreciate them and enjoy seeing how they will do in my northern garden and seeing the bloom.
If you want to be happy for a lifetime plant a garden!

Thumbs up Although I don't expect them, bonus plants or fans are always such a nice surprise. Wonder where/when the tradition of sending bonus plants started? Anyone know?

That's a good question! I would love to know too. A guess... with daylilies multiplying like they do, maybe the sellers needed to get rid of some daylilies to make room for others. Once the word got out that bonus plants were being given away with orders, the sellers found that they received more business and it turned into a tradition. As I said though, it is just a guess. Winners all around!
