Thought of two "H's" to get us started this morning.

There are a number of cultivars growing in my garden from hybridizers whose last names begin with "H" ....

Sandy Holmes

Don Herr

Dale Hensley

Curt Hanson

( triple "H", Hybridizer, Hanson, Hidden Cameras ...maybe I shouldn't have two cups of coffee before starting a thread Rolling my eyes. )

Katisue Herrington

Rich Howard

Heat, some dl don't like to open well on cool mornings.

Heavy substance for petals is a plus in my book.

HARDY! I love that they return year after year and make our cold winters easily and take heat also.

Hybridize, lots of fun! I have never messed with any of that, but I'm sure others will chime in w some photos of their own creations?

How's about Hemerocallidaceae, the name of the plant family to which daylilies belong (they're no longer placed in the lily family, Liliaceae). Other genera in the Hemerocallidaceae, such as Dianella and Stypandra have blue flowers, unlike daylilies.

Love your "triple H", Char! Rolling on the floor laughing Those are some beautiful daylilies, though. Lovey dubby

"H" is difficult, and sadly I do not have much time to play today. Too many errands, also have to make two nursery runs. This weekend we will (hopefully) grade an area so we can put in a small (3' x 8') seedling bed, and I need to get more planting mix and amendments for it.

I also want to get some more Iberis, but let's save that for the Is. (I probably won't have pictures (the garden is a mess right now even though there is scattered bloom among the Iberis), but I can talk about how it contributes to the daylily garden!)

But as I don't think anyone has mentioned Halo yet, here is one of mine (which I have not seen bloom in years, thanks to the deer Grumbling and poor soil in one bed). (Our dog has been diligently chasing deer out of the garden, and the whole bed is being renovated so I hope to see it in bloom again, next year if not this year.)

Editing this to add that I do very small scale hybridizing (the technical term for which, I believe, is "pollen dabbing"). My avatar is one of my seedlings, a tet, but it is not reliably polymerous (I think too much shade is playing into that) and it is only low percent. I do expect to see a couple of seedlings bloom from it later this season, though, and hopefully those will be higher percentage. (Whether poly or not, I like its cheerful small flower which blooms E-EM. I just hope that it doesn't catch the rust that I am currently battling!)

How about 'HOPE'? When we see a pic and buy the plant we hope it will look as good as the pic! We hope to see the emerging shoots of dormants in the spring, we hope our seedlings will bloom this year ... I could go on and on.

Here's hoping you all have a wonderful 2015 daylily season

Well my "H" is very similar to some of the others mentioned here but it is "Hybrid" and here is the AHS definition of a Hybrid:

I see, I have not really had a good understanding of "Hybrid" and it is still a little fuzzy to me after reading that. *Blush*

Hope, yes, Hilary, Hope. An excellent point! What is a garden - any garden - without hope? Hope for the health and growth of all of our plants, hope for their beauty (in and of themselves, and that we have arranged them harmoniously), hope that pests and critters and all bad things are kept at bay.

And for daylily gardens in particular... may I also add

- Hope for that special seedling (whatever it is that you are hybridizing for)
- Hope that the daylilies open well (a problem here, with cool nights)
and
- Hope that the weather improves and the rust goes away!

H for history

I love reading about the history of daylilies beginning with the species, F1 and F2 generations that lead to all the hybridized ones we have now. Brian Mahieu did his hybridizing by crossing back to species and older cultivars like Jennie Love for vigor.

I wish Brian Mahieu hadn't quit hybridizing. He was very talented.
