I just potted up my lantana and Persian shield cuttings yesterday and need to take cuttings from a dusty miller stock plant I threw under the GH bench last fall.
I have a bunch of seeds to start and will soon be doing that.

Good for you. Thumbs up I'm itching to start seeds myself. But I don't have a greenhouse and our temps fluctuate too wildly to be very successful with winter sowing. Grumbling Can you believe this? It's 34 degrees right now in midstate SC zone 8a, tonight our lows will be 24 and the day after tomorrow our highs will be close to 70 degrees. Seedlings will sprout and then freeze. Crying I've got to talk DH into getting me a greenhouse. Sighing!

I'm with you Eric - planning on spending the weekend getting some dragon wing begonia and persian shield, and geranium cuttings going, and get my early seeds started (Lisianthus and Begonias). I don't have a green house either, but I have a big space with lots of grow lights. Its a bit early to start most of my seeds, but I should have started the begonias and lisianthus last month. March is just around the corner - thats not spring here, but its getting closer.

Geof, How do your Persian shield? I had a low success rate with them till I started using Oasis, now I'm almost 100%. I start quite a few things directly in cell packs with Pro Mix, but I have also used sand, a sand milled peat mix, or vermiculite. I use Pro Mix PGX for seed starting.

@Eric4home - I have had pretty good luck starting persian shield in pearlite. I use for it for pretty much all of the cuttings I start. Persian shield are slow, but they usually root up. I don't do a lot of them. I have two largish plants of it in pots, and then just take cuttings for some of my mixed containers.

I also use Pro Mix for most of my seeds. I mix in 30% pearlite when I need a coarser mix.

Loved the persian shield next to the giant limelight coleus last year

Persian shield, need to add to wants.

I've started some seeds:

cleome
nasturtiums
phlox

Back in the fall, I tossed out poppy seeds and bluebonnet seeds.
Larkspurs and orlaya grandiflora have popped up.

No cuttings started here yet, but lots of sprouts indoors. If it weren't for fussing around with those seedlings I'd be climbing the walls right about now! Hilarious!

The plectranthus has been blooming all winter long. It's amazing what it'll do with only a little care, and very minimal light. Lovey dubby

It's beautiful in the GH today. I think I'll go do some of my cuttings. I have dusty miller and a Verbena to do. I think it's a 'Lanai Strawberries and Cream'.

Ric, I was thinking of you today when I had to pull my Persian Shield from an ant infested pot and two pieces broke off. I have never tried rooting it but I was prepared with perlite after seeing your posts about it! I have my fingers crossed!

There was also a Gerber in the same pot. The roots were intertwined with the Persian Shield so I had to carefully tease them apart. I was able to divide the Gerber into six plants, it had multiplied that much!

Six plants from the 1 gerber plant. That's great. Congrats to you. Hurray! Arlene, I rooted a couple of pieces of persian shield in perlite in the fall for the first time. It's fairly easy. I failed to pot it up and bring it indoors, and now I'm not sure what happened to it. If I lost them, it's because of my neglect. I had a lot of family emergencies that took me out of town a lot, so my overwintering perennials/houseplants have suffered. I have got to convince DH to get me a greenhouse. Give it a try, you'll be wonderfully surprised at how easy it is. nodding

Our Gerbers never thrive, they will put on a nice summer show here but multiply, never. Being a premium annual here it's easier and less expensive not to include them. I believe the last time or 2 we used them they developed something resembling thrip.

And I just checked the ones I transplanted and they are pushing new buds. I have always been able to divide them so I never try to save the seeds. Well, I pull a handful and stick them in the ground, just in case one or more wants to germinate but they never have. Hilarious!

I have a bunch of stuff started. castor beans, hyacinth beans. and my cutting have been up-potted. Just today I transplanted about 350 each coleus, and begonias. I find it very economical to order plug trays from our Hobby Green House Assoc. I used to get my Cream Marigolds in an open seeded flat, about 700, but this year the nursery we deal with offered the in flats of market packs. Now I can determine how much space I have to start caladiums, zinnias and some of my veggies. My brassica are already outside getting hardened off. I'm almost a month late getting my peas in but the ground was so cold I don't think it will make much difference. It has been nice enough that we have almost all the beds cleaned and ready.

Beds are tidy and poppies are coming up from seed planted in February. Mountain bluet is blooming; agastache, penstemon, roses, rudbeckia, echinacea, peonies, hollyhocks -- all putting in new growth. Dahlia seedlings started indoors are hardened off and I'm debating whether to put them in this weekend. Weather forecast says we are past frost danger but mid April last year we did have frost. What to do...

When it gets that close, I plant. However, it's a good idea to have some straw, leaves or an empty pot for temporary cover on hand...just in case. Smiling
