Got into our HD over the weekend..and saw these two lovely freesia plants just so very fragrant. I know they are bulbs and my search for its care and planting, often starts with it as a bulb. But I have it now as a young seedling with blooms and will be repotted later in containers.

I would like to know how it went with those who have freesias. Thanks in advance.

I love freesias, they grow well here and oh how I love their scent!

I have them mixed in the garden here and there and planted in mixed pots with other plants. If you let them, they will self seed and sprout up here and there. I've had some freesias sprout up in my lawn, in between some bricks and even in my field that is covered in wood chips.

I'm green with zone envy! There is a greenhouse in the neighboring city where I love to browse each spring. They have cool old glass houses with lots of stock plants and mother plants, and in the cool house there is a massive Rosemary plant, and in the pot with it is a clump of Freesias. As I recall, they typically bloom this time of year and make the entire greenhouse smell heavenly. After blooming the leaves are allowed to mature and dry naturally, then they lay dormant till the next winter. I think the bulbs are best somewhat dry during dormancy, but I believe the big Rosemary uses most of the water quickly during that time. I think if you use a free draining potting media they will be easy for you.

Rob, naturalizing Freesia is the coolest thing ever to me! I've never had any luck with them. Seems temps get too hot for them before they have a chance to bloom. Someday though, ....if I had a greenhouse!

Roy, I am so encouraged by your Freesias! I think I will go planting today, our frost advisories have been lifted and just nice coolish dry temps forward. So are Freesias more of a Spring bloomer plant, then goes to sleep in summer?

Yes tarev, spring or late winter- they prefer cool temps during growth and blooming, and to go dormant when hotter, dryer weather arrives. In your zone I don't believe they would require much care in the ground (like Rob's), but in a pot should still be quite easy.

Ah okay! So I will definitely have to start planting today, so the plants can enjoy the cooler weather. Just have to protect it from my chewing monsters here.

Tarev, here in my zone 10B garden, Freesias, like many Daffodils and paper whites multiply like bunnies. Mine are just starting to open. as long as they get good drainage, yours should do very well. Mine have been in the ground for many years, and nothing has eaten them.
We're getting night temps in the high 40s this week, so I had to close the orchid house, but everything else is doing ok, so far.

Thanks Carol! Oh I hope these freesias do not become a meal...our vicious snails here are desperate..grrr! But that is reassuring that it does not get eaten in your planting area..you know what, come to think of it, they did not attack my paperwhites..interesting..they have a taste this year for succulents.

Freesias don't have the tender leaves that snails like, and Daffodils and Narcissus are toxic. Protect your Clivia!!!

I do love freesias and cannot grow them here. I have tried planting them in areas where the soil does not bake in the summer heat but I think my winters are too cold for them here too. I sure am enjoying your photos of them, Tarev. smiles

I am still on baby steps too, Bonnie. I will see how it behaves in summer, but I am expecting it will just die down and go dormant as advised by the other growers. The real challenge will be next season if it comes back. For now..let's us both enjoy the show. I will update the photos as it goes.

I seem to really be confused on freesias. This is my first year with them, but it appears they are only hardy in zones 9 and above. So I was thinking I could mulch them and nurse them though winters here in zone 8b, but now it appears everyone is saying they don't like heat. The instructions with the bulbs said to plant in full sun.
How are they suppose to bloom in zones 9 and above if they don't like heat and need to be in full sun? Will they just grow foliage this year, die back and maybe bloom the next year in the fall? I thought they would boom in the spring.

I think what they meant is it will die back in summer, during the hotter days. But it will start coming back during late Fall to Spring where it should be rainy and cooler season in our zone. So it likes the winter rains, and the sunny heat up during winter to spring . But not the drier and hotter days of summer.
