Wayne, I "seeded" a garbage bag full of Spanish moss onto the lower branches of a couple of my oak trees three years ago. I took foot long pieces and simply draped it over the branches. A friend brought the moss up from the Mississippi Gulf coast area. Since I have hundreds of tropical plants outside, in and under large oaks/cedars, and am always hosing them down and fertilizing them with weak solutions of orchid fertilizer, I just hose and fertilize the moss as well. I doubled and then re-doubled the volume of moss I had. I probably have doubled it all again. Some of the moss is now over 4' long and in the spring, it will all be in bloom. The vast majority of people I told that to thought I was pulling their legs. Even people who lived in the deep, deep south with Spanish moss all around had never heard or seen Spanish moss bloom. A couple of years ago I took some pictures of those flowers just to prove I was loony!
What started my growing it though was not just because I liked the way it looked and saw it no where in our area. I was told by a Master Gardener (before I became one of them) that I could not grow it up here in Starkville. I don't like being told I can't do something.
I still kid that Master Gardener about his "error".
