I'm looking out over my back yard and thinking about how quickly this frozen landscape will transform over the next eight weeks. I've started to notice the buds appear on bradford pears, forsythia, jasmine, etc and I know it's just around the corner. It's impossible not to be excited about the garden this time of year!

Here in NE Mississippi too, Wayne. We have 6" of snow on the ground this morning. Its really pretty but I'm staying in, other than working some inside my greenhouses. We very seldom get any measurable snow.

No, Donna. I tried growing strawberries a couple of years ago, but between the birds and animals, I got nothing for my trouble.

Ken, my neighbor has put netting over theirs. I have always grown some mixed in with flowers and never had problems, but I have ordered some June bearers thar state they will be as large as plums, so I will put these in the garden. Will see how this works, may be a different story??? Shrug!

Yeah, I did the netting thing but simply found growing strawberries, or at least getting much out of what I planted, was harder than I wanted to spend time doing. I will plant various vegetables in my 12'x20' raised garden in the spring/summer and plant heirloom, gourmet garlic in the fall for late May/early June harvesting. That's my "cash" crop. Whistling

I got a bunch of plants on clearance a couple of years ago and they have flourished...in every OTHER yard I've transplanted them to! The birds and squirrels keep mine picked clean but the plants are beautiful. I think strawberry plants are super interesting, I love watching a bed of strawberries multiply even if I don't get anything to eat for my trouble. Smiling

I know what you mean, but I have to scale down my expectations. I'm supposed to be a computer nerd and I could spend every waking hour in that space without ever catching up. The time I get outside and seeing my plants grow is about the best I can hope for. In season I definitely expect to harvest peppers and tomatoes and herbs, but my resources are severely limited.

Also I got fourth/fifth generation plants growing in a half dozen other yards, so I feel like at least I'm doing something worth while Smiling

Oh, why didn't I know you when I was developing my website? I had not a clue what the term "website" was or how to build one (and probably still don't). Sighing!

If you ever want to talk about tech stuff let me know! I might want to know your secret about growing moss but otherwise I work for free.

Wayne, if you are talking about Spanish moss, there's no secret there.

I'm going to have to give it a try. My grandmother brought some spanish moss back from her sister's place in Florida every year for about forty years and killed every bit of it.

I have a terrible habit of assuming this stuff is hard, when in fact I know if you stay out of their way plants actually want to live Rolling my eyes.

Wayne, I "seeded" a garbage bag full of Spanish moss onto the lower branches of a couple of my oak trees three years ago. I took foot long pieces and simply draped it over the branches. A friend brought the moss up from the Mississippi Gulf coast area. Since I have hundreds of tropical plants outside, in and under large oaks/cedars, and am always hosing them down and fertilizing them with weak solutions of orchid fertilizer, I just hose and fertilize the moss as well. I doubled and then re-doubled the volume of moss I had. I probably have doubled it all again. Some of the moss is now over 4' long and in the spring, it will all be in bloom. The vast majority of people I told that to thought I was pulling their legs. Even people who lived in the deep, deep south with Spanish moss all around had never heard or seen Spanish moss bloom. A couple of years ago I took some pictures of those flowers just to prove I was loony! Sticking tongue out

What started my growing it though was not just because I liked the way it looked and saw it no where in our area. I was told by a Master Gardener (before I became one of them) that I could not grow it up here in Starkville. I don't like being told I can't do something. Whistling I still kid that Master Gardener about his "error". Thumbs up

Does it ever get cold. We now have about 1/2" of sleet and its now raining. I don't know why its not sleeting since it is 32F. Our temperature is supposed to drop to 28F mid-morning and it will be 18F tomorrow morning. It will not get above freezing today. Brrrrrrrr Sighing!
