Winter, never far from a northerner's mind. This time of year the question is when will it end ....during the late summer, fall...will I get everything done before it starts.

One of my favorite "W" terms is Watermarks. A watermark is an eyezone that is a lighter color than the color of the petals.

WASH - a layering of one color over another, like an overlay dusting.

The Wow factor that stops you in your tracks when seeing a special daylily, this would vary according to each persons personal preference.

I guess the first "W" word to pop in my mind would be weather. I am like most gardeners constantly aware of the weather. Always checking the temp., the rainfall, the wind etc. My gardening day is always started out by checking the weather. Is it too wet to dig, too dry to divide, too cold to be out...things like that. The good thing is that the daylilies seem to take it all in stride, and be able to tolerate most conditions and to adapt by going dormant in the worst of conditions, but the best part is to be able to flourish in the best of conditions.

Wishlist! Unfortunately we aren't able to buy from your wonderful hybridizers but I have a friend who imports and sells. This year so far I have ordered Sunday Sandals and Tickle My Fancy. I am tempted to get Fluttering Beauty as well if I can find a spot for it.

I love watermarked daylilies, but apart from 'Cameroons' (which is about to get the boot), I don't think I actually have any! I guess I need to go do a search to find one with some rust resistance...

My term for today, is

Whites (or, perhaps more propertly, the near-whites ).

I take it 'Cameroons' in your garden has rust problems? How about a comment in the data base about that? I see it has a rust ranking of 5.0, I am sure just going by pretty faces a lot of people have selected this plant, it is beautiful.

We finally have some good weather news...tonight is suppose to be the last night below zero for the next 7 days!

The never ending, ever growing Wishlist! I need more near whites in the garden, I have Arctic Lace and Emerald Dream on the list, White Mountain is pretty, too. Years ago I had Arctic Snow and White Zone...don't remember why I moved them out, must have needed the room.



If you can find room for Fluttering Beauty you should get it Hilary. I've had it for 5 or 6 years, the blooms are huge and very pretty. Definitely worthy of a spot in the garden.

Weeds, big ones, little ones, ones that spread underground, dandelions, pig weed, crabgrass, some annoying tiny fuzzy leafed one... with hundreds of seeds

Larry, the strange thing about 'Cameroons' (and I think I have read something similar about it, in other gardens) is that is has only had rust here once, which was the first time I had rust sweep through the garden in 2006. As I recall it was pretty rusty then (but nowhere near as bad as my then-favorite 'Icy Lemon'), but at that point I was loathe to toss it, so I just cut it back and sprayed with Dawn. I have not seen rust on it since... but curiously enough, there has also not been any obvious active rust in that part of the garden, either, since then - and I think I would know as I left a couple of other susceptible daylilies back there. (The current rust plague is in two other parts of the garden; we live on a one-acre property, part of that taken up by a creek, the house, and hardscape. 'Cameroons' is out in the "Back 40", on the far side of the creek.)



My reasons for booting 'Cameroons' have to do partly with the fact that I can't/don't enjoy it out there (its location is now too shady for any decent performance, and the deer eat it every spring anyway), partly because I really should downsize this collection (not enough sunny deer-free space - though that doesn't stop me from buying more daylilies ), with the kiss of death being its rust susceptibility.

I don't need to bring down the site Susceptible Hammer on it, though, as it has already been given a Rust Score of 5.0, and been flagged as "Shows Susceptibility".

I mistakenly assumed you were booting it from the garden because of rust.
"Warning" I will make an attempt to keep this on topic with the "W" word warning. I don't think a lot of people pay any attention to the rust rankings, but would read the comments. So all comments and warnings about a plant made to the database are appreciated, of course the praise of the "Worthy" traits of a plant is also appreciated.

I forgot to add that I do have a child plant of 'Cameroons', which is 'Cameroon Night'.



CN doesn't (to my eye, anyway) have the watermark of 'Cameroons'; it does have the (obnoxious, for my taste) white midribs of 'Peacock Maiden', and it may have inherited some rust resistance from the tet conversion of the latter. (Rust resistance is hard to evaluate in this garden, since we don't get rust outbreaks every year. Thus far the plant seems to have shown some resistance, but that might be a relative thing, or pure luck in evading infection.)

There are things that I don't like about 'Cameroon Night', though (apart from the lack of a watermark) : the white midribs, the spottiness (from water or dew), the shorter-than-registered scapes, the short bloom season (low budcount and branching - but that might be an artifact of shade), the lack of rebloom. When the blooms are good, though (no water spotting), I can almost even forgive it the white midribs. (I do have some seedlings from it... nothing spectacular, though, and not a watermark to be seen.)

Since I am trash talking cultivars, allow me to express my frustration that seemingly a lot of modern white or near-white tetraploid daylilies have some degree of rust susceptiblity - or at least, that is my perception. Lately I've been hunting for white tets with some degree of rust resistance, with the result that I've been putting some older tet cultivars onto my Buy List. I've also purchased Tetra 'Lillian's Thin Ice', which I hope will have the resistance that the dip supposedly has (and that it opens as well as the images seem to show - cool nights being another issue here).



I do somehow still have the diploid white 'Tuscawilla Tranquility', which shows resistance here, and last year I added some Mike Huben near-white diploids, which I hope will also have some rust resistance.

I might add that I have read that David Kirchoff is a rust magnet. I have had rust on it once in the 7 or 8 years that I have had it but then again, here in the north, rust is not much of a problem.
