I'm looking for as much as is available of the following:
BORAGE - (Borago Officinalis)
LACY PHACELIA - (Phacelia tanacetifolia)
GOLDENROD - (Solidago Rigida)
FROSTWEED - (Verbesina virginica)

I don't have a lot to trade this year, I'm just establishing a forage field of wildflowers for the bees. Sighing! If you are like minded I am purchasing common buckwheat and white sheet clover in bulk that I can share/trade. If you have any of the above seeds I would gladly pay for shipping and your efforts in harvesting, storage etc. Please tree-mail me and we'll see what we can work out.
Tom

Tom, We have tons of goldenrod here. I never harvested seed from them before so I looked it up and this is how one said to harvest the seeds.
"Goldenrod is super easy- wait until it has gone by (now?) and is mostly dry - cut the stems a couple of inches from the base and stuff the plant top down into a paper grocery bag (it won't take many to fill the bag)
Put the bag(s) in a well ventilated spot like a screened porch, shed, garage, whatever to let the plants dry out.
2 weeks or so later, take them out and whack the dried plants around where you want to place the goldenrod. Shake anything in the bag out as well.
You'll see goldenrod next fall."

I could probably send you some this fall since I doubt any seeds survived the winter. I'll check. If not, remind me in the fall and I will send you some. Smiling
Tami

Thanks Tami for the future offering and I'll keep that in mind but I think I could find a local stand of goldenrod to harvest from in the fall if I can not find seeds for planting this season. I did have one goldenrod on my property last fall but didn't think to harvest it at the time. The drying in paper bags method is what I do on most flowers and grasses but many years that fails because by the time the plant is in seed and ready to harvest the fall rains have set in and soaked the plants making them mold in the bags.

I went out and found a few plants that still had their seeds. I don't know if they would still be viable after the couple of freezes we had.

Goldenrod is my dog's go to plant if her tummy is upset. That is the only plant she hunts for, except for winter time. Lol

Tami I think the seeds would still be viable after a freeze, after all that is the normal propagation. Your dog is smart or well advised. I looked up the medical properties of goldenrod and found it acts as a diuretic, meaning it flushes water from the body by increasing urine output. So it would help her flush her body of any toxins she may have digested. There are several other medical benefits listed in this article below.

I doubt that there would be many seeds remaining in the dried blooms you found but if you want to collect them and send I could get a start to harvest again in the fall and spread out for the next year. The one plant I had I can no longer find in the brambles.

What a great thread Tom ~ Thanks for starting it because I learned it may be possible to grow goldenrod in the PNW. Now I will be on the look out for seed as well. I am also trying to establish bee forage as well and do not yet have extra seed. I would love to share with you if I had any of those Thumbs up

I see Outside Pride from Independence Oregon has these seeds. It doesn’t mention Goldenrod being a bee forage, and it seems to blossom late fall....? I wonder if that is because of our climate? I know back east it is a bee forage... I will have to try it and see.

Hey there Toni,
Goldenrod is one of the last bloomers for the bees to forage on before winter. I'm trying to avoid the dearths of the seasons by planting these varieties. Outside Pride has many of the seed I've been looking for and so did Ruhl Bee Supply (although they have recently ran out of most) but the shipping is the killer most of the time. If I lived close enough to pick up from the store the prices are okay but shipping is more than the seed sometimes, especially in the quantities I'm looking for. I ran into that same problem when I ordered wildflower seed through Amazon. I was able to find Buckwheat and white sweet clover locally and I'm ordering Lacy phacelia through Ruhl .

How large of an area are you converting to bee forage Toni? Send me a tree mail and we'll discuss it. The 4 plants I've listed in this thread are the start of a longer list that I want to acquire over the long run. Locally the blackberries are the main nectar flow but it is short lived, especially last year. I'm doing about an acre in buckwheat and another 1/2 acre in wild flowers and a large annual flower garden. When it's in bloom this summer I'll post pictures.

@TomPNW

I have been to Ruhl Bee Supply many times and never noticed they have seed... I will have to pay more attention Rolling my eyes.
I just ordered from OutsidePride ~ 5000 seeds Lacy Phacelia, 5000 seeds Goldenrod, and 5 pounds yellow sweet clover. All of that for 5.95 shipping which I didn’t think was too bad.

If you still need some by the time mine arrive, I think that will be plenty to share.

To answer your question “how much am I going to plant” ~ well as much of our 13 acres as possible. I really need to research and find out where these plants will thrive. I don’t have much area ready for them yet.

Thanks Toni for the heads up on OutsidePride. Thank You! I looked at them again and found that shipping on 1/2 pound of seed to be only $3.50 so I don't know what happened the last time. Maybe I didn't see USPS and picked UPS or maybe it was because of the 25# of buckwheat I had included. Rolling my eyes. At any rate I'm ordering the Borage and Lacy Phacelia through them now.
Closing this thread now since it all worked out good.
Thanks for everyone's help. Thumbs up
Tom

No need to send postage, pay it forward when the opportunity arrives. I hope you raise lots of goldenrod. Let me know and send me pic if you do. 😀
