Thread OP

Good morning,

I'm very excited about finding All Things Plants! Spring has Sprung here in the Northwest and I'm ready start digging in my garden!

I have a question about plant labels. I'm a member of a neighborhood garden club in Portland, Oregon. We host an annual non-profit Mothers Day Plant sale mostly consisting of plants donated by our members. I've been tasked with creating labels for 300 plants. I know what proper information to include on the label for each plant. The labels will need to be waterproof. I plan to use FileMaker database to capture the info for each plant.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to guide me in the process of printing labels for these plants?

I really appreciate all your help.

Have a great day!

Sande

Welcome! to ATP!

When we do our local master gardener plant sales we use old window blinds cut up into the appropriate lengths, and then we use a #2 pencil to write all the details on each tag. It's time consuming and not "professional" but it works quite well. Smiling

Avery makes weatherproof labels. But they are expensive.

Also, Brother PTouch label are generally weatherproof. I am not sure if you can download your label files to a Brother labeler.

Hi Sande and welcome to ATP!

What you want is Avery Design Pro. Here is a link to an article I did about it .. it gives you a good idea of what you can do with the software.

Assuming that this plant sale is something you don't want to put alot of cost into- I think Daves's idea of using window blinds would be the way I would go. Also if you are selling several of the same kinds of plants you could just hand out a printed flier for taking care of them. Your flier could contain basic info for iris, hosta, daylily or bulbs. That way you can just hand out one flier and cover most of the plants.

The avery software works great, but if you download the program, it includes other junk that you may not want on your computer. You'll do well to read what you're getting into when you go through the download process. I did, and then quit.

But I do use their Design and Print Online. http://www.avery.com/avery/en_...
It's the same thing, without the convenience of having the program directly on your computer, but without the other junk that has nothing to do with printing labels.

A label only really needs a name, IMHO.

Rick I checked out what you said ... they do not offer Design Pro any more - it's apparently a down and dirty version of the other software offered without all the bells and whistles.

I've uploaded the original Design Pro for those who want it ...It's 88 megs in size so it's the actual program and not a link - works fine with XP and Windows 7 - haven't tried it on Windows 8 or 10. Click on the link and save the file.

Wanted to add that it doesn't install anything else.

We make fliers also. So we put just the name of the plant on the tag, and then display this printed and laminated flier right amongst the plants. We usually make a flier for every kind of plant that we have at least 25 of.

You can see the fliers displayed here:

Thanks, Anne (Xeranthemum) for producing that link. That's very considerate of you.

The avery download does install an extra toolbar, for convenience. But that installation can be unchecked, if one desires.
