I have a few early spring mileposts that assure me better weather is coming.
# 1 I can see old perennial tops in the melting snow
# 2 Hibernating animals are waking up, smelled skunk this morning.
# 3 The Robins are back. They usually show up around the tenth on March.

The snow usually melts close to the garage & my daffs show up there first, but the snow is not melting enough yet.....there are no bare patches anywhere......No robins, no red-wing blackbirds, no turkey vultures which usually start showing up here in Feb. Not much birdsong at all.......So, no signs of spring here as yet.....

I miss the birds. I expect it will be awhile before the Song Sparrows and Wrens show up.

My wrens usually show up in early June.....song sparrows spend the winter, I have a few at the feeder....also, some white throated sparrows were here all winter, juncos, titmice, & chickadees.....no cardinals, no jays.....

Spotted a song sparrow checking out our feeder yesterday. Empty unfortunately. There is now a hole in the snow under the feeder. You can see all the seeds & shells in it. A cock cardinal was there pigging away. See the hen most often. The January blizzard saw 4 extra cocks show up. Maybe all last years' kids were boys.

How come they are tweeting in Pepperal? I have not even heard red winged blackbirds.

We dont hear the RedWing BB/s until late March or April. We have deep snow on the ground .
A Carolina Wren has been here all winter but no Song Sparrows. Now that the snow is receeding from the deck ,maybe birds will return to feed on seeds that were covered.

I haven't seen my Carolina wren since last fall......hope the poor little thing didn't freeze, but had the smarts to go south....I can finally get to my bird feeder.....the fellow across the road has a window feeder, so he's kept the birds going when I couldn't.....he also keeps the deer fed, but once the snow melts they'll be over here eating my plants.... Sad

yes, deer should be on their own.

There was more melt yesterday so by landmarks, we should have 4 feet of snow left. John had dug a path to the tube feeder & suet cake in the front yard. At the height of the snow the cake was just far enough away so he waded to it. I like it for the wood peckers, although white breasted nuthatches also help themselves.

I miss my red-bellied woodpeckers! One patch of grass opened up yesterday.....under the hemlock trees, so not as much snow accumulates there.......I'm just overjoyed to see grass!

The evergreens is where snow melts first here. There are no fences and propertys are segregated with islands of mulch and evergreens.

We don't have fences or sidewalks out here. These two melting spots make me laugh. They're one of the neighbor's cesspools and one of ours! Reminds me of the very funny Erma Bombeck and "The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank".

I'm enjoying the photos mainly because the snow has ended. It was a very long February!

What are your plans for the tree cut in half? I'm sure you have something in mind!

Years ago I made a birdhouse that has hung on the tree. I didnt want the tree cut below where the nail is.
We took out three trees along the east and north sides last January.
