I took this photo at Rock City Gardens when I went there for a seminar last Saturday. It was already on the property when they bought it 35 years ago.

Oops - forgot to put in the heading; it's a Pony Tail Palm

cross posted with you mj...Yeah it looks like Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata)

I've also seen them referred to as the Elephant Foot!

Wow, that is amazing! Although Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is not really a true palm they sure are neat trees. That one must be ancient since they are fairly slow growers. I have a couple that need repotting and once we make our final move (south to Sebastian) next summer I plan on putting both in the ground. My sister and her husband moved to Sebastian a couple of months ago and she told me about Rock City Gardens and I can't wait to go there one day ... maybe this weekend since we're going down to visit! Ours is in the ground...probably about 5 feet tall now, but has 4..maybe 5 caudexs at the base. It's handled temps down to 28º with no problem so far.

Oh Lin, Sebastian isn't that far from me (Indian Harbour Beach). Rock City is lovely but a little pricey because of the "high end" landscapers and people who live in Vero Beach.

Elfie, Yes, Sebastian isn't far from Indian Harbour Beach at all. I didn't realize that Rock City Nursery was pricey ... my sister didn't tell me that, LOL but hopefully they will have sales once in awhile or I will more than likely just browse unless something really pulls at my heartstrings. Smiling I really look forward to moving to Sebastian and being closer to my sister and her husband who just moved there from the Fort Lauderdale area where they'd lived for almost 46 years. It's a 1 1/2 hour drive from our house to theirs and we are buying a home in their neighborhood; it will be so nice living near them! The weather down there is a tad warmer in winter than it is here in Daytona Beach and I love that area so I'm excited about moving there next year!

That is amazing. I was wondering about putting mine in the ground. it is in the biggest pot possible & I know it is root bound. I left it out all winter & didn't even bother to cover it for the Feb freeze. Since I am re-doing the back, maybe I need to find a spot for him.

Tara - good to see you!!!!! How are you doing???

Good to see you too Jean! I'm heading in for foot surgery in the AM... Blinking Wish me luck!

edited: Forgot to add, Jean...Go for it! I've got a neighbor, a street over, that has one growing in their front yard...Out there in the wide open! I'm feeling certain that the frost would bite it, but they do throw a cover over it when we're due for such. It's been growing there for quite a few years now. I've also got one that's potbound, and I'm thinking of trying the same.

That is one amazing pony tail palm Elfie! I've seen some large ones but that one takes the cake. Blinking

That surely is the largest Pony Tail I have ever seen. I used to have one that weighed over 50 lbs. but it was a midget compared to that whopper. That plant is in full sun. I have two small ones that I grow in bright shade. Can I acclimate mine to full sun? I guess the downside is that the Pony Tails may suffer when they have to brought back inside in the fall, though I could grow them in one of the greenhouses if I had to. I like to grow my two on the porch so that they can be enjoyed more.

Now that's one massive Ponytail Palm. Thanks for the photo Elfie!

Kinda makes me rethink the one I have in the ground in the back yard. It's about five ft. tall right now and looks great, but it may turn out to be much too close to the house in 20-30 years.. Oh, well. That'll be someone else's problem! Whistling

drdawg-... Ken, I'd just keep enjoying your Ponytails the way you want. They are regularly grown as houseplants up north and can handle a fair amount of shade. I have another one growing on another part of the property that is the same age as the one in the back yard. It is surrounded by tall trees, so sees very little sun. It's a foot taller and looks just as good if not better.

It's not like they do anything spectacular like cover themselves with huge multicolor blooms if grown in the sun. They look exactly the same, except the leaves are a bit darker green in the shade.

On another note, these were originally three plants in a 4" pot. I wonder what they would look like now if I hadn't separated them, but planted them out just as they were in the pot.

Now I'm kinda wishing I hadn't separated them!

Do they have to be grown in the ground and outside to bloom, Hetty? How old do they have to be?

Yep, and I guess they can look rather spectacular if grown to that end:
