If this is what it looks like, Anne, it is the T. fasiculata var. densispica ("Cardinal Air-plant"). Does this Tillandsia grow native there?

Oh that's beautiful! I've never seen a Tillandsia in SC - I collected all that I have when I went to visit my father in Ft. Lauderdale - they are more than plentiful there!

I was 'over the moon' as the British say when my T. caput-medusae bloomed last year. It's got a nice baby on it now.

The Cardinal Air-plant is native to S. Florida, and I have several of the same plants, also collected there. Ask you dad to collect some T. setacea ("Southern Needleleaf") and perhaps some T. bartramii (Bartram's Air-plant) for you. They are pretty neat too.

Lol .. my father is 96 years old - he wouldn't know a Tillandsia from a dandelion. Next time I go down there I'll get in touch so you can tell me what to look for and how to differentiate them.

That's a pretty one, Anne. The only tillandsia I have beginning to bloom is my Spanish moss, and only that that was over-wintered in the greenhouses, hanging on mounted plants.

Anne, here is one of my T. setacea and T. bartramii. He will possibly see them growing wild down there. The setacea is the first one. These pictures were taken last summer and both plants have grown quite a bit during the fall/winter months.

Definitely visiting evergreen cemetery when I visit Lauderdale again .. that place is Tillandsia central!

LOL, Don't forget, Tillandsia usneoides occurs all over the Lowcountry. :-)

Anne, the yellow that shows in your photo make me think it might be one of the T. concolors, there are so many cultivars though. I had several for a few years (bought from Verde Gardens in Swansea, SC) but the winter of '14 took them out.

I've been in the process of moving over the last 6 weeks - utter chaos in the house and outside the house .. we moved my garden a week ago yesterday. The weather was perfect for the plants but hard on us humans ... overcast and raining. It's going to take a long time for me to get things organized and situated inside the house and outside.

I did manage though to get better pictures of the Tillandsia blooming.

Looks like a T. hondurensis cultivar to me. There are many of those, however!

Probably correct, there is no yellow showing this time.

The plants are healthy and beautiful, good growing.

Hi Alice! I'm staying in Summerville - the new house is just a mile and a half away from the old house in a better neighborhood. I moved because I needed a bigger house since my little sister Lynne is moving in with me in June. I have a nice backyard and tomorrow my brother is coming from Columbia and we will be building my new 8 x 16 foot greenhouse! I'll be doing a time lapse video of the construction. If it turns out good then maybe the greenhouse people will be willing to give me some 'extras' if I let them use the video on their web site.

Ken since its not bright red are you still going with the T. fasiculata var. densispica? The flowers really don't look like the T. hondurensis - the closest thing to I saw on google images is the T. aeranthos.
