I got my itohs from Michgan Bulb today. The Julia Rose looked great with a great root system, but the Berry Garcia was heavily damaged in shipping. The roots were okay. I called customer service and a new one is on the way. Great customer service and I get to keep the original plant. The first two pics are Julia Rose and the other two are the Berry Garcia.

I also got Berry Garcia from MB. I received mine last week and potted it up as it was still to cold to plant. Some of the soil came off the root and I was able to see what the root looked like. I believed the plant was tissue cultured. The tuberous root was very small. I think that it will take at least 2-3 growing seasons for them to bloom.

What size pots did the Itohs from Michigan Bulb Co. come in? They seem to have good prices on the Itohs.

In addition, what's the disadvantage of growing a tissue cultured peony? Any advantages?

I forgot to measure the pot but it looked exactly like graycrna4u's picture. The disadvantage is that you have to wait 2-3 years to get it mature enough to bloom. If I have a choice, I would much prefer to get the plant as a division. You get a mature plant faster that way. But since I cannot get this Berry Garcia as a division in the US, I have to buy it via MB. This year's plant is actually smaller than last year's plants. I think last year's plants might be more mature than this year's, perhaps by a year. I will have to see if I get any flowers from my Lollipop itoh peony this year.

Karen, thanks for letting me know. I heard about tissue cultured peonies only recently. I hope your plants do well.

Me too, on the tissue versus cultured. Not sure I understand yet but I always seem to get nice big roots and tubers or whatever so no worry. At least I think 'no worry.' Shrug!

Bought a text book on botany as I am working on the accessions database at our local botanical garden and really am pretty ignorant on the more complicated stuff. Right now am researching plants that we seem to be the only one having. According the BCGI. Making sure it isn't just a spelling issue or a period in the wrong place. THAT I can do. Hilarious!

You guys probably know this already, but Michigan Bulb, Gurneys, Henry Fields, and several other companies are basically the same company. They are all owned by the Scarlet Tanager Group in Indiana. Scarlet Tanager owns the names to those old companies. They are like a large warehousing company and everything for those companies comes out of the same place in Indiana. The actual companies do not exist anymore. Meh...

I noticed years ago the phone numbers for Brecks, Spring Hill, and Michigan Bulbs were from the same area code and prefix even though there were two states involved. They were also almost consecutive from the same group which means they all had to come from the same office telephone switch. The three catalogs had the same account number on them. They are more like a brokerage than a nursery. Service was always great and they honored their warranties. Phone number arrangements always catch my eye as a result of my former employment.

It could be that they are a plant broker, but my point was that those companies exist in name only. Smiling It's all coming from the same source. Smiling

Yes, I remember several years ago when several of these companies went out of business. How many brand names are in the Scarlet group? Park, wayside and burpee are also a group?

Yes, I believe Wayside is owned by Burpee, I don't know about Park. White Flower Farm is owned by Gardener's Supply (I think). Since I very rarely order from any of those I don't keep track of who owns what anymore. Smiling

As long as they honor their warranty as well as they have in the past I'll keep ordering from them, regardless of who owns them. Yes their plants are tiny but you can still get varieties not offered locally that way and it sure is nice when they replace any that don't grow with no argument at all.

I find it interesting that Breck's won't send plants here while the others will. I am not too fond of them since they photoshopped a dahlia that they said was blue. It was pretty but only lavender. I paid an arm and a leg to get it here (someone ordered it for me down south, then transshipped to me here.)

The damaged Berry Gacia is doing great and has sprouted about 3 new scions. The new one is even larger.

I broke down and ordered Berry Garcia from MB today because of you two, graycrna4u and Karen! I don't know which is right but what MB was showing is nothing like the one I got from Select Plus several years ago, it'll be interesting to compare the 2 side by side. The 2 I got from them last year are doing well, starting to see some growth but my cats pulled out the tags before I got them planted outside so I don't know which is which! I might have to switch tags when they finally bloom....

I ordered Kirinmaru, that's planted in the garden, and 2 Kopper Kettle that I planted in pots. All three have grown fine, but none of these plants have any buds yet.

Kirinmaru grew early, and I protected it all winter with a styrofoam cover on the coldest days. I'll let you know if I get any blooms this year.

I thought I killed my Berry Garcia last year when I was weeding. Yesterday I went to check on the general area where I planted this Berry Garcia, I found one sprout whose leaf looked like an itoh peony. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! I guess I did not kill it after all. But I don't think it will produce any bloom for a few more years.

Annette, I ordered the same plants like yours last fall, and did come up looks fine. I agree with you that they are not going to bloom anytime soon. I was thinking about the Tissue Culture Itoh peony from MB that we were all got last spring, it's so little, some of my were come in 2 inches pot.

Karen, so happy you didn't lose your little Berry Garcia, I order three of them, all doing well.
