This first one is a Donau x Exotica cross. It is a soft rose color similar to Donau.

All that said,I do wish someone would set up a registry for us to use. I have been crossing these for years now and have a few I think are worth multiplying and getting out there in the Hippie world.

The book says three years but here with the long growing season it can be done in two.

JT. There are so many plants that I want to try to learn to grow from seeds, just for the diversity. I have the time and the patience to wait for blooms. I need to keep better records, so that I'll know exactly how long it took from germination to bloom. I also hope to get a greenhouse in the fall, to accomodate my new obsession. I've been dropping lots of hints to DH lately.

Ooh, I love that. I tried to order that from ChefMike a couple of years ago, but things went haywire and I didn't get it. I'll get one some day. I'm waiting to see if the bulbs I planted outdoors last year are still there. I'm suspecting that I may have voles. I hope not.

JT, can Amaryllis handle acid soil? I need to pull my mulch back and put down some fertilizer or compost/manure. Do I need to mix in some lime, as well?

Our soil is acid and mine seem to do well outside. Here the problem can be too much summer sun so afternoon shade is a must.

JT. That's great to know about the soil. It looks like I might be moving mine after all, as most of them are in full sun right now. I lost a few large oak trees, as a result of last years' horrible ice storm. We planted a couple of them over 20 years ago, and now they are gone, along with much needed shade for my plants.

Is your summer usually wet or dry? We are very wet here (almost year-round), and I'm wondering if I need to amend my soil, so that it is drains well, or just move it to an area that gets little to no supplemental water.

Wet spring,dry summer and wet fall most years. Soil is almost pure sand all the way to a rice paddy in China.

Have to laugh, FL is mostly sand. Drainage is the most important issue. Soil that stays too wet encourages disease. Thats why I direct the sprinkler heads away from the Amaryllis beds. I tried something new this spring. I planted my 12 new bulbs in a 22 inch pot, with good potting soil, instead of in the ground. Experiment to see if the bulbs are healthier. Also I can move the pot to get the optimal sun conditions.

OK, thanks, both of you for responding. Barbara, please keep us posted on the potted plants progress. I'll feel more comfortable placing my bulbs in pots, if it works as well.

My Violetta is not doing well since it bloomed, looked ok at first then one of 3 leaves started turning yellow, now the other 2 are doing the same, bulb seems firm enough but I am suspecting something going on with the roots, it doesn't seem to be well rooted, any ideas, should I remove it from the pot and check it out?

These are this season's new bulbs. Lemon Star and Spotlight put up a third scape after they were planted. So far, I am pleased with the pot, just an inexpensive plastic pot from Walmart with a loose good organic potting mix with a slow release complete fertilizer. Its in full sun now, but as it gets hotter, I can move the pot (with a refrigerator mover) into a place that gets a little less sun. In the winter,if we have a hard frost, the pot can be moved into the garage, otherwise a frost blanket thrown over the pot should be enough for a light frost. These bulbs don't need a great deal of space and a dozen fit in a good sized pot.

Margaret, I'm surprised to hear that the foliage is turning yellow so soon, you'd expect that at the end of the growing season. The only thing that I could suggest is pull the bulb, check the roots, perhaps cut back the yellow foliage and repot it and see if it puts up new healthy foliage. It could be a root rot which would need a fungicide.

Thank you Barbara, I will do that on Wednesday, it is supposed to warm up and I can take it out to the shed and repot it.
