Daffodil season is finally here in central Kentucky! And in many parts of the U.S. they're coming along, hopefully soon for those of you in the northeast. After such a tough winter, the Daffodils are a most welcome sight this spring.

My early birds are well under way. Tete a tete is always one of the first.

Orange Comet, a new one for me, just opened today. I'm loving it already!

Another new one for me, Monal, opened its first bloom today. A terrible shot of it, but the you can see how bright it is.

These are daffodil fields not too far from where I live. I go up there every year and just stroll among the different varieties. It was overcast but not windy or too cool last week and I took the time to just enjoy the fields.

Wonderful photos Bonnie! Those fields are wonderful! I'm pretty sure your yellow and green double is Van Sion, that variation from bloom to bloom is typical of them. Old House Gardens said something interesting about Van Sion I never knew- that well grown bulbs, like from growers fields in Holland, will have first year blooms with a yellow corolla and cup filled with petaloids, and from then on will have the double bloom form like yours and mine. I'm dividing mine this summer, and curious if I can get them to produce some blooms like they describe!

I'm particularly enamored with your white one, what a pristine beauty! Your pink one is really lovely too, and looks a bit like Louise de Coligney- is it fragrant?

Neal, the pink is fragrant but the fragrance fades as the bloom ages. Years ago I had a pink and white one and forgot to dig it when I moved. Its trumpet was longer than the ones I have here and it was not a peachy pink but a real shell pink. These I bought about 10 years ago and planted six bulbs. Now I have several fairly big clumps.

Great display, Sherry! Mt.Hood looks to bloom really well for you, which is interesting because I've read they perform better in colder zones. Its a high maintenance one for me, it requires division every 3 or 4 years or it stops blooming. Ice Follies is one of the most popular Daffs for good reason, a classic I'd never be without. Love the Ipheion with those doubles!

I've been on a quest for more early whites, but oddly there aren't that many out there. I am excited to see those I got from Old House Garden last year, they're budding nicely.

Bonnie, have you noticed Pink Silk in the catalogs? A trumpet with a shell pink, long stove pipe trumpet, and sounds like the one you had. A friend had given me a single bulb some years back (when they were still pricey), and it wasn't particularly happy where I had it. I divided and moved it last year and I believe she has a couple of buds, if the clump I was looking at was correct, LOL.

I have not noticed that one Neal. My pink was planted about 30 years ago and was one of the first pinks most people had seen actually growing in this area. I will look at Pink Silk.

I planted a short row of six fat daffodil bulbs about eight years ago. They are doubles white/yellow. They have made a good clump but the problem is that they put up a lot of buds and show color but then the bud turns brown before it opens. This bed is on a down slope and has more soil washed over it than when I planted them. Would being planted to deeply cause this? I have both made sure they had supplemental water in some years and just left them to their own devices in other years. That did not make an impact on their behavior. Any thoughts on this?

That is not uncommon with doubles, especially older varieties. It's called bud blast or blasting, and can be caused by various things. Crowding can lead to bud blast. I grew Mary Copeland many years ago (and recently reacquired some from Old House Gardens), and after a few years the buds began to blast. After thinning them, they started blooming again. This can also occur if they don't receive adequate vernalization.

You may notice catalog descriptions saying "non blasting" for more modern varieties. There are some terrific double varieties these days that are rarely, if ever, effected by bud blast. Tahiti is a great one! Flower Parade has Tahiti as a parent, and was beautiful its first year, and looks like its going to be a perennial "good doer" too.

If you have a lot of Daffodils to thin, and don't mind losing a few bulbs, an easy way is to spear a clump in a few places with a fork or spade, and wiggle it back and forth. You'll definitely lose a few bulbs doing this, but I found by accident a few years ago, that it does the job re-invigorating old clumps that had stopped blooming as heavily.

Jack Snipe has been one of my "come back kids". Almost lost them completely, and don't recall what happened, but one lonely bulb survived and kept coming back. I gave it a little extra tlc, and it's back to being a sweet little clump.

Since I began growing Daffodils, I've known that many have cups that change color as the bloom matures. Until the last couple of years, I hadn't realized some have petals that change color as the bloom matures too. First and second photos below are Wisley. This is my first year with it, but the unique flower shape and flaring trumpet make me think it's labeled correctly. The third below is Las Vegas, and oddly I don't recall the petals starting out yellow last year. Again, the bloom looks right in every other aspect, but I'll be watching these closely. I looked at photos from last year, and I can tell these are definitely the same bulbs, but last year the petals seemed to start off white.

Oh, just found this thread. Lovely daffs everyone! Thumbs up

I have had daffs open end of Feb or early March but not this year. This year I have nothing even close to blooming sorry to say. Everything is so late because of the excessively cold February and not so nice March either. And we had snow cover for weeks and weeks and weeks that had not melted. Unusual for us.

But they are coming up all over the garden so there will be daffodils. I just need some patience.

Rita, it won't be long now. Daffs are typically right on the heels of Crocuses.

First blooms on Princeps Daffodil from Old House Gardens. Another that has petals that are starting off yellow, but should mature to ivory-white. I'm really liking the graceful shape of the blooms and the long trumpets!

I checked the catalog about Princeps, it just says bicolor, and does't say white or ivory, so it may just be referring to the varying shades of yellow.

The warm weather the last couple of days is bringing them on quickly. April is a grand month in Kentucky!

Pink Charm one of the first "pinks" to bloom here, and one of my favorites.
