No. Some are single reds. Some are double reds. Both of uncertifiable pedigree. There is one each of species single, species double, and a species sub-species red. The original doubles are from stock from my wife's grandmother and are very old but, since there is no documentation, they are just noids. The original single reds came from Spring Hill about 15 years ago and were supposed to be doubles so they also must be noids.

Should see lots of blooms this week. Narrowly averted a disaster from hail and severe thunderstorms.

Jerry, your fernleafs are wonderful! I can't believe there is that much growth in your zone already. This year the northeast is hit with a cold spring so our plants growths are delayed. I look forward to see your fernleafs bloom.

Single red fern leaf division from Spring Hill several years ago. It is a tough little bugger. This would have been replanted in 2009.

Double fern leaf about to burst open. This is from an old heirloom from my wife's grandmother; I am 74 so one can get an idea of its pedigree.

Species single red from HSFF. Looks as though it is either late or damaged from some of our late near-zero temps.

Nice! I guess your double fernleaf is possibly more than 200 years old! It is incredible how some plants can outlive their owners. Hope my double fernleaf looks like yours someday. They are all adorable. Thank You! for sharing.

The story behind the double fern leaf is the grandmother emmigrated from Germany as a child and the family settled in Minnesota. Later she moved to Buckley, Illinois and spent the rest of her life there. She had passed many of the fern leafs to relatives and friends. She was 100+ when she died. Whether or not the plant came from Germany is an open question. I have had an original piece since 1981 when we moved to Salem. After several moves and divisions I have six or seven healthy plants. At $50 a pop, I try to keep them happy. I purchased a species P.tenuifolia Rubra Plena from HSFF for comparison but it has not developed as fast as some others.

This is P.tenuifolia ssp. Lithophile. A very slow grower.

I love that bed. I spotted it last year and am so happy you are showing pictures again this year. The 'fernleaf' I got from Adelman's several years ago is healthy but is listed as just 'fernleaf hybrid.' I guess the hybrid explains why the leaves are not 'ferny' but rather flat like other herbaceous. I need to add some true fernleafs to my list for this fall.

I bought a double fernleaf from Fina Gardens Peony last fall. It is currently doing well. For awhile it stalls in growing and I become worried. But after I water it, it seems to be better. Here is what it looks like, so cute like a little poodle.

Don't you just love the shaggy looking foliage? So different from other herbaceous foliage. Yours looks so healthy and is growing very well! Mine has several buds but is only a couple of inches high, yours is so much more advanced. I wonder if either will ever catch up with Jerry's!!??

These are not really good pics but I wanted to capture some before our expected thunderstorm tonight. They may be flattened tomorrow.

Your fernleafs look so lush and gorgeous, Jerry! I hope mine will be like yours someday. I don't know if I have the heart to split it up when it gets big for fear that I may kill it.

These are relatively young plants of 5 to 6 years including the fall planting. They are easy to divide but if one is happy with the clump and it is doing well, there is no reason to bother it in less than 10 years. They must be handled carefully when they are dug so the storage roots will not be broken off without eyes attached. Some time ago, I posted my procedure for digging fern leafs by using water pressure to hydraulically force the soil away from the roots. Messy but it works for me.
