Perhaps this isn't the place for this, but I guess it will eventually be a sort of "garden room". We had a fire in February in which we lost our garage, woodshed and woodburner. We've got everything all cleaned up now, and where the woodshed and furnaces were we're wanting to put up a pergola. Cement slab dimensions are 14x17. If anyone reading this has a pegola around that size, I'd sure like to see some pix of it, and any hints you can give us re: building one. There is another cement slab that we're leaving and hubby mentioned it would be a great place for a fire ring, tho I found a really cute chiminea at Menards for $129.00. LOL The furnace has been moved out of there as of yesterday. That is where the pergola would be. The cement slab to the right is what might have the fire ring. Or I will just put plants on it. Green Grin!

Anna - Oooooh! A clean slate to build or plant on! I have a mini-pergola or large arbor (whatever you want to call it). I make my hardscape on the cheap. This link will take you to an article that will show you a picture of mine. You may have already read this article. :

Anna, Looks really good. What a great spot for a patio, something good from the ashes.

Maybe we should call it our "Phoenix Room". LOL Rose from the ashes, you know.

Yes, I believe I did read that article, but it's too small for our application.

We tore down 3 old hog buildings last spring; one of them had what is called "Tenderfoot" flooring for small pigs. It is just metal flooring with plastic on it (like the whole thing was submerged in a vat of it to coat it all uniformly).........there are 6 sections of it 5x6 feet in dimension. I had the idea of setting one of those panels up against "something" and hanging my cork-mounted phalanopsis orchids on it. Someone else suggested (and I had thought of this too) of putting those panels on TOP of the pergola to provide some shade, and since the panels are quite heavy in construction, I could also hang plants from the flooring sections. Since the fire consumed quite a few of the places I had previously hung large pots, this would be great. This is what those flooring pieces look like.

""Phoenix Room"" - What a perfect name!

Wow! That flooring looks really sturdy! It WOULD be great as a roof to hang baskets from. 14 x 17 is quite large. Hmmmm ....

How about a design like this one? Are you wanting side rails to it?

Yes, the flooring is very sturdy. Remember, it had to hold pigs. LOL

Yes, a nice design, but I'm sure VERY pricey. We'll just muddle and do it ourselves, probably get the materials from Menards. What are side rails? Guess I'm a bit dense. LOL

Becky, followed your link to the feedlot panel arbors. Really beautiful.
Not the best pic of the Arbor at the walkway entrance to the GH. I think you have seen this in some older pics. I have better pics in the other computer. But we used feed lot panels for the sides of this one. Last year we grew cucumbers and Hyacinth Bean on the Arbor.

Holly - I do remember your sweet arbor/pergola leading to the Green House! So very nice!

Ana - Side rails would be like the second photo down on this website:

What about something like this?

No side rails.

The outdoorrooms site is way too involved and too ornate. I don't want anything like that. We don't have alot of $$ to spend on it.

Oh, no..........we haven't had time to do anything on that yet. The SU has been busy helping neighbors in the field.

We built this pergola a couple of years ago. I am not positive about the size, would have to measure for sure. We built according to budget...rofl. I am in hopes this year to build a deck under it because mowing when everything is out is a pain as you can imagine. We went to Menards and got the lumber. We built it in a couple of weeks, we were just taking our time and working a little bit a day on it. I have started vines as such on each corner this spring, have added some furniture and this year laid a plastic tarp on the ground, just couldn't keep hauling everything out to mow....

I have never posted on this site so I hope it works ok. I was so excited when we were done. I hung my solar chandelier immediately..lol

Any questions feel free to ask.

happgarden - Wow! Love the size of your pergola. I agree that pavers or mulch under it would be awesome! I put large pavers that look like brick under my mini-pergola. It was very cheap and easy for me to do that versus other options. (I, too, garden on a budget!)

Brick-look pavers:

And then edged it with actual bricks of similar color (the photo at HD makes the brick look really dark, but it actually matched the pavers):

Lucky for us we already HAVE the cement floor in place. We have not done anything on it yet except talk about it. LOL

Happgarden, I would be interested in knowing the dimensions of yours.

I told the SU that I was NOT interested in any fancy wood for it..........cedar, etc, etc, etc.............green treated lumber is just peachy-keen for me. I don't want it to cost a freekin' fortune. LOL

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Thank you. I feel silly for not knowing. I'll go back to silently reading about the progress of the pergola project(s). The one that @happgarden has is similar to what I'm planning to build. Still reading as many different posts/forums looking for ideas that will work and fit my budget. The floor in mine may be a patchwork of assorted bricks and patio blocks that I have salvaged.
