Would love some suggestions for peonies that would bloom well when grown in shade? I have a privacy fence area on the east side of my house and it only gets later afternoon sun from the southwest, but there is a holly and a crab apple nearby that shade it. Can I grow peonies there successfully?

There is a relative of peonies which grows in shade:
Glaucidium palmatum

It has flowers similar to single peonies.

There are some of the species types which take more shade, I think.
I have forgotten which ones, but will try to look them up.

Paeonia obovata is also known as Japanese Forest Peony (I see our database lists it was Mountain Peony) - mine grows in a semi-shaded position and does quite well even though nearly everything else I've planted there has died.

I have seeds for that one, but no germination yet.
They say to plant the fern leaf one-- in part sun, as the leaves will burn in full bright sun.
That is paeonia tenuifolia.
The book by Halda suggests paeonia veitchii does well in light shade or open woodlands.
He agrees with Dora on the obovata suits shade. He suggests growing it on the west side of structures so it does not have morning sun , but a slow warm up.
P.emodi is recommended for shade and woodlands.
This is just from the book and I have no experience with these.
Some of the more common lactifloras will grow in part shade, but the flowering will be less than if they get more sun.

My forest peony is on the east side behind some trees, so I don't think it warms up too fast. I've collected seeds from it for the last couple of years, but haven't had much luck germinating them.

I have had no luck germinating peony seeds, but I keep on trying!
