We've had a lot of rain lately and I got outside to late to take photos of one that would have been stunning; 4 big white flowers, on a s tem, on a barrel type cactus. But I snapped some other things instead.

That cactus with red blooms is :Aporocactus flagelliformis or rat tail cactus;

The succulent below it with that furry leaf with brown stripes at the leaf edge is: Kalanchoe tomentosa
Succulent beside it with that pointy succulent leaf is Austocylindropuntia subulata or Eve's needle.
Succulent with yellow leaves closer to the front of the photo I think is some type of sedum.


The bigger succulent with that reddish rosettes looks like Graptoveria 'Fred Ives'

The more green colored succulent looks like another type of sedum, I think.

Is it possible that the red one is Echinopsis chamaecereus, 'Peanut Cactus'? I realize the growth habit doesn't appear to be that of a 'Peanut Cactus,' but the 'Rat Tail' cacti I've seen have always bloomed bright pink. I don't want to come across as I'm questioning you, I am just curious because the flower color is throwing me off.

I have both Rat Tail and Peanut cacti, they do have similar looking blooms, but the growth of the plant is different. Rat Tail stems grows upright then pendent, while peanut cacti grows more in a cluster/mound of stems upright then slightly leans/ angled but not all the way down.

Also the buds of Rat Tail it seems to extend further from the main plant as it tries to get more light before the buds open up. During spring some tips of Rat Tail also has that pinkish tips, somehow reminds me of a rodent's pinkish nose. The color of the flowers for rat tail is red as in this case, there are some with pink color. Peanut cacti buds/flowers remains closer to the plant, and the tips do not go pinkish. Peanut cacti flowers are more red orange in color.

I've never seen a red rat tail cactus (I love red flowers... sadly I don't have any red flower producing cacti; now I want a peanut AND a rat tail *snaps fingers*), ty for sharing!

I am not sure that the flowers' centers on Elfie's red flowers look the same as the rat tail's though. Is it possible it is something else entirely (I mean I'm not convinced it's a 'Peanut Cactus' anymore now that you showed the comparions pictures)? Maybe a picture of the overall cactus would help pinpoint it further.

The flower in Elfie's rat tail is still partially open, eventually it will open up more. It takes awhile to open up especially if it gets shaded, the more sun the more it blooms wider. My garden gets part sun then shade the rest of the day, so it takes awhile for the blooms to show.

I will show you a bloom sequence of the rat tail's flower taken last year..it was its first time to bloom in my garden, I was so afraid it might blast, so kept taking pictues for my file It was its only bloom last year.





For this year, I am monitoring three buds...woohoo!
