I have never had an issue with losing an Evergreen until this year. My favorite Baja California was 2 yrs old and I decided to move it to a new bed in September. I have several empty tags Angry I will not be adding in the Fall this year.

Lisa, I also lost Hillbilly Heart. Handwritting on the wall is new and has one small fan coming up.

Weeding yesterday I didn't see a sprout on Elbino Vampire or After the Bite and both are Dormants. What's with that!! I will not adding in the Fall again.

It is ironic that hillbilly heart is not hardy in Kentucky.

Handwritting on the wall was new last year.

I am glad for these posts on Hillbilly Heart. It limped along last year so I moved it to a different spot. It does have one tiny fan coming, but if it's going to limp this year also, I would rather toss it and give one of my new plants a chance.

I liked Hillbilly Heart, but first purchased it for the name lol. We did get down to -8. I have been downsizing my older plants. If one is not a strong and robust plant it may be leaving here. My Black Parrot is struggling. I added it 2 yrs ago and it is still a SF.

Karen, are you a baker? That cake looks wonderful!

Thank you, Teresa. I have two passions--- gardening and baking with amateur status at both I am afraid. This picture is not mine, but the cake is one of my most requested.

I haven't checked thoroughly yet to see what I lost this winter; hopefully not too much. I know Firefly Frenzy struggled last summer so I may have lost that one and Dragonfly Dawn was new last summer and it was a nice clump but looks like only one small fan is green. It has been too cold to be outside checking the garden. I did check on Happy Happy which I lost the winter before. I replaced it and it looks like it made it.

That is good to hear Cindy. I love the looks of Happy Happy, but when I recieved mine the fans were so small. I asked for a refund. So I have never grown it.

Karen, we have that in common. I love to bake also. If you could copy and paste the recipe to a Tmail I would be delighted to try it.

Creole Moon is another one I lost.

My DD is slowly coming around too. I bought more of it from the Trimmers to have potted and protected because I like it that much. And I'm a plant hoarder. Whistling

James do you mostly grow Dormants? Just wondering about in yours and Cindy's zones. I am guessing several Semi Ev do ok. It is a bummer to lose plants.

Teresa, I grow all three foliage types. I have had only a few problems with loss and all of it with fall added plants. I had terrible luck trying to overwinter in pots last year but I didn't have that problem this year - learned a bit and moved forward.

We typically have enough snow cover to protect all but the most tender plants and anything I am really concerned about comes indoors until I have enough that I can test a fan or 2 outside. I'm listed as 5b and have been as cold as -20 in the time I have lived here but I've managed to overwinter Gerbera daisies and gladiolus as well.

The snow cover is what my area usually doesn't have. This past winter was an exception. I do have some EV that have never been tender.

As I have mentioned before, I consider the snow cover for plants the ONLY benefit to living in a lake effect band.

I did not lose any but "Last Snowflake" was struggling until I took it out of the ground 2 weeks ago. I put it in a pot and it is looking just fine now. I also have "Hillbilly Heart" that has not thrived. 3 very small fans. I moved it to a full sun spot last fall. Will see what it does. Just does not sound like a very hearty plant!

The winter before this one, I lost a lot of those that were fall planted. This winter was much milder with lows only down to minus 16 a few times. Also I planted much earlier, mulched much heavier, and we had a much better snow cover. I have only a couple that have not started to show green yet, but we've had a late spring with temps as low as 20 degrees this morning. I am especially happy to see green growth on Private Reserve, and Happy Happy. Smiling

cross posted...I lost Christopher last year...I loved it myself. I liked it so much, I would actually try it again given the right plant at the right time for the right price.
