Does anyone else have this plant? I am so happy with mine but I need to do something with it. It is outgrowing my space. I have it in a bedroom and it is blooming constantly but it is also growing. It is now much taller than I am on this stand....I think I will put it outside when the weather gets warmer. On the deck in the morning sun only. It blooms every month of the year but just now it is blooming more than I have ever seen it bloom and the fragrance is wonderful. I moved it away from the window to take this picture to show you.

JB: Wow, that is gorgeous! I'd never even heard of the African Gardina so I googled to read more. I found it's also called by another common name of Dwarf Loquat and the photo that showed the fruit looked a bit like little loquats.

I wonder if it's a difficult one to propagate, have you ever tried rooting cuttings? I might have to order one from Logees; they offer a 2.5" pot for $12.95 which seems reasonable compared to another other on-line place that sells it for $25.00 for a 2.5" pot! I bet your plant will enjoy being outside for the summer if you have a shady spot in your garden.

I have never heard of that one either. I would be afraid to order from Logee's because I have heard such bad things about them in recent years. Have you ordered from them before Lin?

I picked up a noid Gardenia at the grocery store last month. I picked one that had 20 buds It is still blooming but I had to move it to a room that I do not go in often because the fragrance was so strong it was giving me a headache. At first I thought it smelled wonderful when I walked into the room after awhile when it was full of flowers it was too powerful.

Cinta, I've never ordered from Logees but I used to hear good things from folks on DG about their plants .. only bad thing I think I heard was the shipping charges were quite high.

Oh yes ... Gardenias and other fragrant plants can be quite overpowering indoors! I keep quite a few plants indoors but nothing that blooms with fragrant flowers. One time a few years ago when we were having an extremely cold spell during the winter, I moved a few hoya plants inside. They happened to be varieties that are winter bloomers and I ended up having to move them back out to the porch because I was having breathing problems ... beautiful fragrance but oh, so overpowering!

Yes years ago I read about everyone talking about getting hard to find plants at Logees. Then a few years ago they started talking about getting plants with bugs and tiny, tiny plants. I have not read anything recently so maybe they corrected the problem.

I thought I was getting a terrible cold. Then it got so bad I thought I had a virus. I moved the plant because just smelling it and as sick as I felt it had to go. After moving it I started to feel better only then did I realize it was the plant making me sick.

I do have problems with Casa Blanca Oriental Lily outside. I have to plant it far away from the house because it is another fragrant plant that makes me sick even outside.

I have had good and bad experiences with Logees but I must admit the good outnumber the bad. The only problem I had with them over the years was a few plants with insects and I called and they replaced the plants with no question. I also found them very helpful with problems. They take the time to answer emails and phone calls and are extremely helpful. The African Gardenia which is s member of the Rubiaceae family is called dward-loquat (Eng) and dwerglukwart(Afr.). It is said to produce fruit but mine has never produced any fruit. It has more or less an orange blossom scent, not at all overbearing.

To propagate you should do it by seed or by summer cuttings. The baby plants are extremely fragile and I have honestly not tried it because I did not want to cut mine back. Logee told me fo take a 6 inch cutting or so and try starting it in water first. Once the roots sprout move to a rocky/sandy mix so the roots can grow stronger Once the roots are formed pujt it into a small pot with very basic soil that does not have fertilizer added. Keep pots on the small size until roots are strong.

One thing I did read is that this plants flowers strong scent seems to indicate that they are moth-pollinated. Moths of course would pollinate at night. Not having any moth in my house I assume I will never have fruit. Maybe this summer if I decide to put her outside, I may get lucky and have some moth find the scent and then off we go. Thumbs up
