I was driving the other day in town and heavy traffic and saw a huge hosta!! It was surrounding a small tree and was almost up to the first branches. I didn't have my camera or I might have circled back and stopped to see if any one was home.

Love both Sagae and K. Dragon, beautiful. I have what is suppose to be T Rex but I need to move it or add some compost.

I love Sum and Substance and Blue Angel!

Duane, that Sagae is largest I've ever seen. Wish mine was half that size. One of my favs.

@rosebud, if you are just beginning with hostas, my advice would be not to buy too many to begin with. According to the database, the maximum recommended zone for hosta is zone 8b. You may be OK in zone 9a - perhaps Ann has a view? @ViolaAnn

The potential problem is that zone 9a may be too hot, not that it is too cold! We grow hostas in England (zone 8b), but not in France (in France our garden is in Menton, zone 10a).
But you could try the plants you have bought and see what happens. Perhaps if you have a nice shady spot in your garden in which to plant your hostas?

Here's a link to a French website about hostas - it includes advice on care, planting, etc., and they even have a hosta book that you can buy. But you can probably get all the information you need for free on the internet.

They are wonderful plants, so I completely understand that you want to grow them!

I think the suggestion that you not get too many to begin with is likely a good one. I would also Google "hostas for warm climates" or something similar. You might get some good advice. Since my zone is much colder, I don't have experience growing hostas in warmer places.

I'll comment more either late tomorrow or next week. It's bedtime now and tomorrow will be hectic.

Hosta seems to need water and shady spot but i don't think hot temperature is a problem.
Jane From "le jardin anglais" grow his hostas and heucheras in the South west of FRANCE.
I 've just spend my saturday afternoon repot my small collection (13) of hostas
and I put them in shady spot below my heptacodium
I put my plantaginea in full sun...no flower since two years !
Venus seems very interesting
I am looking for a book to help my choice.

Need help with my 5 year old Empress Wu.
It grows healthy, and even blooms. Seems resistant to snails/slugs, in 90% shade, NE facing perennial bed. Good moisture, and regularly fertilized. BUT never got big. Only 12" tall. I was soooo looking forward to a giant

I would agree. I had to remove a large tree a couple of years ago and have been amazed at how much faster the hostas grew in more light. I've had to move some of them because it was too much sun, but for most the growth rate was much faster and a few are doing just fine in full sun.

My Empress Wu was bigger than 12" when I planted her. I am excited to see what she does going into her fourth year here. Last year she was by far the largest Hosta in my gardens, Sum and Substance which has been in place for 15 years looks like a medium compared to the Empress.
