Hello, Daylily folks! I am not one of you, meaning I don't grow Dayliies and I know very little about them. But I went to a Daylily show yesterday to take photos to add to the database, get out of my house, and hopefully tease and torment you guys with their loveliness! You've probably seen most of these before because when I put them in the database there were less than ten where I posted the first photo. But that's always exciting, right?

Now, the show was in a small room at the St. Pete First Baptist Church which is apparently where the club meets. The vendor set up there was Johnson Daylily Garden. You can check out their website here: http://www.johnsondaylily.com/ The show was split into two sections: flower on scape, and flowers off scape. They also had them sorted into categories that I somewhat understood. Things like miniatures, doubles, and spider. They also had voting where you could choose your three favorite on scape and three favorite off scape. For not being a Daylily person, it was harder than I thought! Also, I learned what the term "chicken fat" means in regards to Daylily blooms. Hilarious!

I'll split this into a couple posts to lessen the risk of me losing the entire thing. So let's start the virtual show! First up were the off scape flowers. Also, sorry if I'm blurry in some photos. I was trying to stay out of the way and be quick.

Samar Star Fire

The next grouping said "Seedling". Since Daylilies don't come true from seed, I guess this is where people plant seeds and just see what comes up? Sounds fun. So here are the seedlings people brought in.

Well, that's it for the off-scape blooms. I'm going to give my eyes and fingers a little break and come back with the on-scape varieties in a bit. And there were very few repeats between the two so expect entirely different varieties when I come back!

How nice to see all these blooms. I've noticed at our daylily shows that, because of the lighting and because they were picked early in the day, that many of the daylilies look a bit different then they do in my garden. However, Witches Wink looks just like mine, and is one that I consider colorfast.... The wonderfully rounded yellow ( the ninth in the seedlings section), with the great edge caught my eye too. Great form....Too many beauties to pick one favorite , but Dragon Knife, Indigo Edge, and Angel Armies are especially appealing to me....Look forward to seeing your other pictures........Maryl

Thank you for posting about the daylily show. I really enjoyed going through your database images this morning and now seeing them together in a post was even better. There are to many to pick favorites, but a few that caught my eye were Ruffled Dude, Big Fuss, Popeye the Sailor....Christine Walser Hite is a popular one here. The first time I saw it was at our local daylily exhibition. The seedling class was fun to see as well! Look forward to seeing more of your images.

All right, it's time for the on-scape flowers. But first here's a couple of pictures to give you an idea of the show itself.

Now, like I said, there are a few repeats in this section, but not too many. I noticed some of the tags were slightly misspelled when I was adding them to the database. I've been trying to correct them as I go, but if I miss one, please forgive me. I also noticed there were quite a few Daylilies with Biblical inspired names and I wondered if they came from the same grower. Like, maybe that was their "thing". I've been to African Violet, Orchid, and now a Daylily show and I get as much enjoyment out of the names as the flowers! Okay, let's get back to the viewing!

Beautiful. And now I have Blood, Sweat, and Tears singing in my head. Hilarious! Mellie, some hybridizers do have a theme. Not as familiar with Daylilies, but I know of one Iris hybridizer that can be identified nearly always as soon as you know the flower name--he picks a lot of rock and roll song titles. Big Grin

Mel - That was awesome! Thank you for sharing all those photos and adding many to the database! Looks like that show was a lot of fun!

Could anyone enter their daylilies or was this strictly for growers/sellers?

I'm pretty sure it was for anyone. I think it was mostly the club members who were presenting, though. In the newspaper announcement it said people could bring their Daylilies between 8:30 and 9:30 with the show starting at 10:00 am. It was good publicity for the club. I got there a little after it started and as I was taking pictures I heard one of the club members say how they had gained two new members in the first fifteen minutes! He seemed really excited about that. I know I had a lady come up to me and tell me that they met there at the church once a month and how growers would come to the meeting and you could buy all the new hybrids and cultivars much cheaper. I just nodded to be polite but if I had any interest in Daylilies, this sounds like an active club to belong to. They also had a talk at 11:00 am on how to grow and care for Daylilies. Most of the people there went into the room where the talk was being held but I just kept on snapping pictures.

I'm glad everyone had as much fun looking at these beautiful flowers as I did! And hopefully, you saw a new one or maybe one you just have to have now. Although, I hope I didn't tempt you too much! Also, I've put this on the new calender of events section, but I'll link to it here: http://garden.org/apps/events/... We have a Daylily Mecca each year along the I-4 corridor where you can go visit local growers and shop your hearts out! It's an annual thing so if you can't make it this year, maybe start planning for next year. The link above also includes a link to the Daylily Mecca website so you can look at all the growers involved and where they are. They also hold some special events like breakfasts and a BBQ dinner. Sounds like a perfect vacation for a Daylily enthusiast!

Thanks for the thumbs up and the acorns, everyone! I'm glad you enjoyed the show. And hopefully, there's a show near wherever you live. And if there is, be sure to add it to the Gardening Calender of Events: http://garden.org/apps/events/ And if you go to a show or sale, be sure to take lots of photos to share with everyone. And add them to the Plant Database to help it grow. (It's also an easy way to get a lot of acorns!)

Loved loved loved the show. Especially enjoy the seedlings. Boy would I like to have seen that Thin Man that was making a poly that day. Ned's Bettina is also just a perfect bloom. Someone must be a Ned Roberts fan. They seem to opening better than some of the full form daylilies. It must be a bit cool down there in the mornings a well. My flowers are really struggling in the morning. The good thing is, its still below 90, so lots of fun to still be had dabbing pollen. nodding
