While outside tending to my plants, I smelled something dead. : Blinking The odor was getting stronger as l moved around. Confused l figured the retched smell was coming from the woods. Shrug!

Then, as l started toward the potting area, l found the culprit....Amorphophallus paeoniifolius.

I saw the flower bud the other day and
Thumb of 2015-05-12/Reine/7b72de
forgot about it.
One look and l had instant recognition that this was the cause of the stink.

I have moved the plant quite aways away until all is fresh air around it.

These flowers can smell like a dead cow in the hot August sun, enough to gag a maggot. Hilarious!

Sure was glad it wasn't a dead critter, l'd have to be scrubbing on them dogs. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

yuk! Wonder if this is the kind hubby was talking about last weekend, he said there is a plant that grows to look sort of like a orchid that stinks like
something died and blooms only every few years. We were discussing stinky plants when we were walking past some sort of a bush with white
flowers that smelled like something died, like a dead rodent, but it was the bush. We was telling my sister about it and she said they would be
great selections for a enemies`s yard, LOL.

It would be nice to watch this and similar plants without having to smell them.

There is a live video for "Perry the Corpse Flower" at Gustavus Adolphus College. You can watch the plant as it grows and see the flower without having to smell it. Rolling on the floor laughing

Or this one from 2010:

If the links don't work or I copied them wrong, use the key words "Perry the Corpse Flower' and you'll find the link to the video.

Long story short( I've told it here before) I intentional did everything I know to do to make my big amorph konjac "Pappy" bloom early, i really wanted to show it off for the big family Xmas gathering... The wife's family has never been impressed with my plants, so I thought that might get their attention! Rolling on the floor laughing
Much to my chagrin, he only had a 2-3' spike and ended up stinking us out for New Years, which I've vowed to stay home for, for the rest of my life!
So we all got a good dose... Mmmmm

oh well, shows us we cant expect 'everything to go right' in nature.

That does sound funny maybe with luck my copse flower will bloom on a day the state comes over to check out the living condictions/statures of our house. Every year they do this because its a group home and we have disabilities.
The konjac is supposed to be really bad.

No actually I plan on giving it to my boss for the upstairs room at work to lurk at until it stops stinking.

@reine
Any ideas on the size of that bulb?
I really want mine to bloom but it's been slow to size up and still isn't ready.
I'd going to guess your not real sure, so, how big is that pot?
What size roughly was the plant last year?
Just trying to get an idea..

Here's a few of my konjac(mostly) starting to really shoot, such fast growth!

Cool I think mine will be around that size. you should buy this Amorphallus fertilizer off Amazon, its from Germany and its really good for voodoo lilys meant to fertilize titan arums but will work for others of the genis too.

@Swayback This flower is from an Amorphophallus paeoniifolius. The bulb was about 7 inches diameter early this spring. It had split the pot it was in and l repotted the bulb into a 15 inch diameter plastic pot. I wasn't expecting it to bloom this year, because it was about 5 inches diameter when l bought it last spring. I have 4 plants and l can see babies coming up next to the main stem of 2 of 3 that are too small to bloom. lf they are large enough this fall l'll cut them off the main bulb early next spring and pot them separately.

I fertilize regularly. This year l am using Hasta Gro plant food.( Last year l used Miracle Gro.) Lots of sun and water, maybe a little bit of shade in July and August.

I do not have experience with A. konjac or any other Amorphophallus. Sad But it looks like you are doing a great job growing them. Hurray! Hurray!

Your garden looks great in the background!
I bet I'd have a field day!

I've seen pics of that species get really big, keep it up and you'll have some monsters!
Sounds like you the care down fine, a lot of amorphs can handle that treatment just fine, some can't...

They say you can just cut them in 2 or more peices to make more, ive never tryied but should.

One thing i have noticed is that usually the pups will seperate themselves by the end of the season, so I dont mess them til then.

Ive also heard and seen that sometimes the bulbs will have pups that dont split off, they usully look like a pinky toe stickin off the side of the bulb somewhere.
If you leave them on, sometimes they do grow a pup the next year, but other times the big leaf will just consume it like it does with the most of the rest of the bulb.
Crazy huh?
We all have heard of animals eating their young, but plants?
I cut them off a week or 2 before planting, that way they survive better, and have time to scab over before planting.

If you would like, I could send you a konjac to try, when the time is right, seems like shipping them with leaf on is not a good idea.

thanks for the leaf pics too! theyre shootin up fast!
