Wow! Loaded with buds! Post another photo when they open, please.

I will! this year is the first time we've used alfalfa meal as a "bloom booster" on our roses. we have 4 tea roses and this one knock-out rose - and they are absolutely LOADED with buds! now it could be that they are a year older and a year more mature than last year, which is the cause of the over abundance of buds, but I choose to believe the alfalfa meal is responsible!

Where did you buy alfalfa meal? People rave about it, but I can't find any in the local stores - including the "feed store" which only carries expensive dog food. When I ask at stores, they look at me like I am crazy.

Alfalfa pellets ought to be available at feed or farm stores. People here use them a lot.

Andi - its readily available here at most local garden centers/hardware stores and what not- as well as feed stores. most gardeners around here stay away from the pellets that are used for feed purposes however, due to them having other ingredients that are not necessarily good for plants. if you get the pellets be sure to only use the ones that specifically say, "100% alfalfa". the meal usually costs about $8 - $10 for a 5-6 pound box. it can be ordered in bulk online as well. which is a much better deal.

we use it on ALL of our flowering plants. especially dahlias! 2 cups per bulb. we used it on our dahlias last year for the first time, that's when we first discovered it. there were blooms GALORE! it was unreal.

I forgot to check for Alfalfa at Tractor Supply store. I checked the other stores and didn't find any. I have only seen the salted pellets for bunnies (which I didn't get). I'll keep looking and maybe order some in bulk. I am putting my dahlia tubers back in the ground. I planted them with peat moss and mushroom compost. I have compacted, rocky, clay soil. I amend the soil for my flowers.

Here, I can buy unsalted pellets, the small ones, for $13 for a 40 pound bag. Try Tractor Supply, Andi, that's where I get mine.
I hoe the pellets in a bit because they do attract all sorts of wildlife. Last thing we need is more wascally wabbits!

ive never used the pellets. the meal is readily available here so we go for that. its ground up to the consistency of corn meal, breaks down very quickly. dahlias LOVE IT!! I urge you to feed your dahlias with it this season. and wildlife? yep! ive found that if we don't work it deep enough into the soil then rodents, rabbits, and who knows what all is out there gobbling it up! we forgot to put the lid back on our container where we store our alfalfa meal on year, the mice had a FEAST at our expense!!
