Sleeping Among the Poppies

Rising from the ground in spring with its droopy fuzzy head, the corn poppy begins to work its magic. Seeds from last year’s crop remained silent through the winter and now this simple yet mysterious flower will capture the gardener’s imagination once again.

Thank you so very much for this inspiring story. It will be treasured along with the poem 'In Flanders Fields' by everyone connected with defending freedom and our way of life! The poem alone tells the story: However, your narrative serves to re-new the drama and the history of what happened one hundred years ago! Our local VFW promotes veterans and their families through the sale of, what else? -Red Crepe Poppies! Thank you again for this special article! Blessings to you!

This is a very touching article Benny, and a wonderful tribute to all servicemen and women. The poem does bring tears to one's eyes and to think that it almost was lost forever because McCrae had thrown it away thinking it not good enough. The remembrance poppy is mystical indeed.

Hi there TBGDN,

Thank you so kindly and I am very humbled. The sell of these poppies is such an integral part of Memorial Day and it is my wish that everyone would contact their local VFW to not only buy a poppy but offer to help in any way they can. You are so welcome for the article and I in turn am touched by your reaction. Many blessings to you and yours on this day and all others. Take care.

@blue23rose,

Thank you so kindly for reading the article and for your kind words. I love this poem and this year I acquired the original Punch magazine where it appeared from eBay. It is a blessing the poem survived. Thank you so much and I wish you and yours a peaceful, blessed today and every day. Take care!

In Canada, the Veterans sell felt type poppies to be worn for Remembrance Day November 11. I learned the poem in elementary school and can still recite most of it. Thank you for the article

Hi there Canadanna,

I have not seen a felt version. I would have loved to known about the ceramic poppies they offered in London for Remembrance Day. Either way, yes, the poem is a beautiful poem and there are some beautiful versions which can be framed. Beyond today, it would be good to read it all throughout the year as a reminder that we the living have so much to be thankful for.

It is a pleasure to have written this article and I thank you kindly for reading it and for your words.

All the very best to you,
Benny
