Photos aren't the greatest, I only had my phone with me. I don't know my snakes but figured I'd better start learning them. I saw this one when I was weeding my strawberries. He was not happy with me!

Hi Arlene.

This is a great site for starting to ID snakes in your area.

I think what you have is Storeria dekayi, Brown Snak

This is a list of the most commonly found in the Georgia/So Carolina area. Just rest your cursor on a name and the picture will pop up.

What a cutie...
I had one of those guys in some forsythia that I was cutting back (up in the branches!)
I rescued it.... Carried it to safety...

Glad there's no bad snakes*

Without better pics it's really hard to 100% guarantee what species that is, it looks like a brown snake or a garter snake, both species show lots of variation.
Whatever it was, it's no threat, they rarely even open their mouths at me... They are happy to excrete a lovely smelling goo from their anus, a pretty good defense mechanism really.
Small snakes usually feed on insects, so having a few of those in your strawberries would be good!
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!
