New introduction by H.W.Hyde & Son, 2015. When I went to scale the bulb for safety back-up, I found two bulblets the size of a green pea behind a couple outer scales. A third even smaller bulblet about the size of a BB pellet fell out from somewhere; so small I wasn't even going to plant it--but here it is---growing. Easiest 'back-up' job I ever did.

I thought that the scales were too small to scale on mine Lorn....

Joe, yes they were too small. The double nose I kept was slightly larger and the scales were a little fatter and more spread apart at the base, making it the most likely candidate of the bunch, but in the end I decided not to scale that one, even. Especially since I was able to snap those two little offset bulblets out of there. These were some pretty small bulbs.

What about that nice 3 pointer you got? Did you opt to break that one 3 ways or did you plant it as a clump? Mine are nosed up in the garden already.

I found these bulbs to be vigorous. Though none of mine looked overtly double nosed, and I just planted them as received, I'm getting two and three stems out of each bulb planted. If they continue like that, I have hopes for good first year bloom.

We'll have lots of pictures to share. Are you planning to do any hybridizing work with it?

Lorn I left them as they were. The stems are just coming up now but I'm not too optimistic for them to bloom this year. They look a little on the small side but I only have two stems up so far. The bigger ones could be coming. If I remember correctly I hear that these are sterile Lorn but it won't stop me from trying! Lol

I heard that too, Joe. But you can bet that if enough of these get in circulation and in the hands of our better 'breeders', somebody is bound to come up with something. I've got mine planted in a garden full of diploid crosses. It will be interesting to see how this all evolves.

So I'm not sure if this is the best thread to ask this question or not. I think of lilies as being/coming from families, where breeding might be easier. So then the next step might be where some divisions/families are more comfortable, and produce offspring easier. Is there something to that, and which divisional crosses are more likely to produce viable offspring?

Generally, lilies cross best within their divisions. I don't think there are any hard fast interdivisional rules but it seems as if L. henryi and L. longiflorum are the most versatile in wide crosses between divisions. That said, they still need optimal conditions and embryo rescue for much of it.

Some general information here if you can wade through it. This doesn't mean these crosses result in naturally reproductive offspring; lab work is usually required to bring the cross to fruition (embryo culture as Joe has mentioned).

Mike I got mine through Lorn. He got it from a company that bought from Hyde and Sons. You can ask Lorn for more info.

Mike, when I inquired about getting some, Richard Hyde suggested I work through Chris Wilhoite at 'Soule's Garden' in Indianapolis, Indiana, who he knew for sure would be getting some. I already knew Chris, so I just contacted him and was able to get 5 bulbs through his order.

Soule's Garden is not in the business of selling any lily or tulip bulbs by mail order. They do ship some other live plants and maintain a website. http://www.soulesgarden.com/Ze... They are a Level A rated, upscale family owned nursery in Indiana. Nice people!

UPDATE: Sept. 29th, 2015.

Question: New growth recently started about one inch (2.5cm) from main stem on two of these little ones. Is this a new second bulblet starting or is this just the original bulblet traveling around? Also, note that all the leaves on each are facing the same direction--like they are coming from the same side of the bulb. I think that is kind of different. Anyway, I think I'm having pretty good luck with these little ones so far.

Did anyone get blooms from this this last summer? I noticed Dutch Gardens has it for $11.95 a bulb. Tempted to order one. Wondering how large the flowers are.

It was short but very cool! Also spring planted but I'm looking forward to see how it performs next year. Judging by the looks of the bulbs and the parent species, it will probably be a prolific divider which will also potentially diminish its full potential as a one stem specimen as well.

I disbudded mine in favor of better performance next year (hopefully). My usual and typical practice for most first year plantings.
