How tall is it? It is really beautiful, such a nice form and looks to have strong stems, which makes me think it is probably a fairly modern variety. Browsing this site may give some clues:

Hello:

I have some additional information on my peony. It's 38 inches tall, has stiff stems, light fragrance, gold stamens, and a bloom time of the 3rd and 4th weeks of May. Even if someone could narrow it down to say 5 possibilities it would be very helpful. Thanks.

Can it be Rozella? The only stiff stems pink that I know is Rozella.

As for timing of bloom, it would be more helpful to know the timing in comparison to other peonies in your area, early, mid season or late blooming.

So what do you think, William? Could it be any of the 3 names suggested between the 2 forums? So far I've seen Edulis Superba, Edulis Supreme and Rozella. Edulis Superba and Supreme bloom early, Rozella is said to be a late bloomer.

I had just realized that and edited my post, LOL! Don't really know bloom times there either, so early, mid season, or late would help.

so did this bloom before, during or after the other peonies in the area bloomed?

Hello:

I live in Growing Zone 7. I also have a Red Charm peony which is considered to have an early bloom time. The Mystery peony blooms just after Red Charm so it must be a mid-season bloomer. I want to examine my peony again tonight to see if its petals fade to silver at the edges. This will help me decide if it is Rozilla, Bev, Edulis Superba, Edulis Supreme or some other variety.

Hello:

As I recall, I purchased this peony about 10 to 15 years ago from Gilbert H. Wild. Maybe, someone has an old catalog and could find it there?

If you bought it at Gilbert Wild 15 years ago, I doubt it is Rozella. Rozella was registered in 1990 and its introduction would be much later. Plus yours blooms midseason whereas Rozella blooms late so I guess you can cross Rozella out.

You may want to try emailing Gilbert Wild your photos and see if they offer any suggestions. Might be a long shot, but some vendors are very willing to help, so it couldn't hurt to ask.

Hello:

I tried sending pictures to Gilbert Wild last year. They were of no help.

Gilbert Wild had quite the rep for sending mislabeled peonies for quite a while, seem to have gotten better the last few years. I've found Hollingsworth and Adelman's responded quickly and helpfully with some I asked them about. I also had some that I got from Gilbert Wild that I couldn't ID, had the same results from them that you did. Maybe they're kinda gun shy in case you wanted to tell them they sent the wrong roots! Do you have any local growers in your area? I've managed to ID a few of mine by finding blooming ones for sale at a local nursery. Also ID'ed a couple (probably) when I went to the UofM peony garden 2 years ago. I took pics of those that I thought were possibles, close-ups of flowers and foliage, and compared when I got home.

Hello:

As I recall the peony I received from Gilbert Wild very accurately matched the description in their catalog. As you see it is very nice and that it why I chose it. The problem is I didn't remember its name.

Hello:

After carefully considering the Mystery Peony's characteristics which are:

Bloom Time: Midseason
Height: 38 inches to center of highest blooms
Stems: strong
Fragrance: light
Silvery Edges: yes
Gold Stamens: yes

I have concluded the best match is the peony Bev.
I thank you all for participating. It was fun. Congratulations goes to Frillylily who nominated Bev. If anyone disagrees please let me know.

Regards,
William

Hello:

I've attached a photo of Bev so that you may compare it with the Mystery peony.
