A few weeks ago, Mike sent me some historical information about Western lilies native to his Humbolt County in northern California where Arcata is located. There are nine ( 9 ) distinct native types known to grow there. There are quite a few of certain ones while some are seen only rarely. I find Mike's work highly interesting in this area. I think if I lived in the county, I'd be finding and putting a GPS locator/marker to every patch that I could locate. Michael Homick told me several years ago, that he and Paul Machado would make week end trips up to Humbolt County on pollen collection hunts and he'd go on to explain about what they found and where they found something, etc. I was impressed then, in what they were doing. Lisa, if you're reading this, you might consider contacting them about obtaining some frozen pollen as well.

Sometime in the future, I'd like to post the article that Mike sent me for all to read. I've got to convert it to an uploadable and readable form. I don't think we can upload pdf here.

Here is what I was told was a cross with a bellingham (L. pardalinum x bellingham) I was given this one and one listed above from a lady that claims the owner of Sun Valley told her it was bellingham.

Out of my patch of L. pardalinum, this is the second one to bloom. This is a native here.

That spotting is really gorgeous on the western lilies.
They must be even better in person!

I had a couple of hybrid western american seedlings crossed with parryi bloom for the first time this year, and both were fragrant!
Pix not so good, it is very hard to get down that low (and back up again!) these days.

This came as a surprise. I planted L. pardalinum seeds on 12-1-13 and look what I found a few days ago.
