Celebrating Gardening: 2015
My gardens are full of lilies but I do have some other plants and flowers that I have a big interest in as well..........although the lilies are top here....
but I love the hydrangea's. I have several of them around the yard here and they are repeat bloomers.......most of them are the endless summer variety.

Other then that have a real interest in my tulip tree. it is about to bloom here with they say about a 1000 plus flowers over the next week or so. The plan was for the ministry of natural resources here to come and take the queen bees from the tree in the springtime when it bloomed and that is usually much earlier then this but with the spring late this year it is late too. Last year it might have gotten about 50 flowers or so but this year it is loaded with blooms. All the flowering bushes are doing great in my area. My honeysuckle did wonderful here this year. The peonies I love them too are not out yet but have a good amount of buds too. the Lilacs did great here too this year........and for some reason the Lilies are way behind. I had a lady from the horticultural society here and they are planning on coming to see the tulip tree..(yellow poplar is another name) which is in the magnolia family actually.....not a popular at all. there will be about 100 people here come a week Monday to see it. I have the tulip tree blooming in this county and the county is huge here. the tree is about 85 years old.
the bees will be good for the lilies and other flowers around here too. the flowers are yellow and green tulips with orange centers that are full of honey and pollen and then they produce a big seed pod. It is growing way out zone for this area too..... So the hope is that some of these small trees can be started. the tree is an Ontario species tree just not my area..........to grow normally.
They would love to me start some younger trees but not sure how to do that. they do not self seed until after a good winter freeze and so far no little trees have shown up under the mother tree...........so they suggest plant some of the seeds in a pot in the fall and leave it out and see if it will bloom over winter and then transplant them in the future. This tree took forever to bloom and they are hoping with the mother tree being able to survive here that the young ones can do the same..... I thought Lilies were complicated at times but this tree takes the cake........ someone said they just clone this tree but not sure what that means, maybe a tissue culture??

so the yard is full of interesting flowers and everything will bloom and be very nice. a lot of things bloom before the lilies start to bloom here. Kursha Maya is just coming out the ground now and it planted forever ago..........

so what other flower interests do you have??

Very cool with the Tulip tree! Personally, I'm a big fan of Japanese maples(lace leaf and regular), peonies, roses, and irises.
Here are a few of my favorites that I have on my property.

But Joe... somehow there are still lily stems in all those pictures Rolling on the floor laughing That is dedication Thumbs up Very nice pictures by the way.

Interests in plants tend to come and go and what I used to like is not necessarily what I like today. But one interest remains and only seem to grow stronger, native plants or plants that naturalises easily. Especially those that bloom in the spring... Forget-me-nots, Cowslips, Snowdrops, Vinca minor, Scilla... When nature and garden meets is what I love the most.

My other real plant adoration goes to peonies, of all kinds❤️
I have even germinated them indoors a few years back from seed. No blossoms yet, though they are getting close.

I like them just about as much as lilies. I am very happy to have peonies blooming right into Lily time.

was just wandering the same thing Joe. Magnolias are beautiful though....... the actual trees that survive here get to be so big though........but lovely in bloom. The tulip tree belongs to that family but leafs first and then flowers. and by the looks of it this morning, hard to tell a leaf pod from a flower pod.......... so just wait and see I guess. the tree is taking forever this year to leaf out...... Last year it was the first to start to leaf and this year the last.........

All the big bushes are loaded around here with fruits and flowers this wife. Hope that is an old wives tale that we get a bad winter with that....... 2 in row is not good already. A lot of the fruit trees were killed off with the late frosts and heavy winter this past year..

I have some tree peony that just finished and the other peony are about to open. That is how I found out about plant reversion. One half of them are reverted to the old color from years ago.........will take a pic once they all start blooming. the reverted flower is very nice.... It says like the color or dig up the plant on the new reversed ones.

I wish the peony and lilies had longer blooming time........

Beautiful, Tracey! Now that I have garden I'm keen to try growing peony. It seems the range available commercially in Australia though is really limited. Where do you find good peony seed, both species and hybrid?

American Peony Society has many types of seed available. It's a great place to go for a vast array of choices.

so the last few days my interest is turning into some plant reversion...... all my peonies have reverted back to species. they say it comes from a weak gene and also a very bad winter which we have had the last two years. Last year a couple of them reversed back but this year almost all of them are starting to bloom and all reversed so far by one.........
the one hydrangea is doing the same thing and going back to species
and then the red maple is going back to a Norway maple....
so things are strange in the garden

The tulip tree is my big interest these days and continues that way..........even more now

the tree is 85 years old and started to bloom today
the conservation society is coming to take a pic and do a media release to the newspapers and the radio.....and also to take some pics and post it to their website....
the tree will be designated a heritage tree and also a protected species tree as well of Ontario...... in my area.......
the tree is growing way out of it zone here........and has its own little mirco climate going on and they think that has helped it survive. 85 is the oldest we can find out for sure but might be older then that...
the seeds are not viable although it produces seeds until it is about 50 years old.........they may flower earlier in some places but the seed pods are aborted.....the viable seed pod stays on the tree........and then falls off naturally in the fall.....
there have been scientists and biologists and forest management and the list goes on and on and on taking an interest in this tree and talking way above my head at times..........but it is has been interesting at the same time.....

tomorrow back to my true big interest in the lilies but for the past week or so and the next few days all eyes are on the tulip tree
the few blooms that are open right now are 85Feet up the tree and the buds are forming lower so hope to see some buds in the near future....
had the tree inspected and it is in good health other then a few dead branches that will not be taken off until the tree is completely dormant in the winter.....

my lilies are growing like weeds due to the humidity and rain we needed but all will be late blooming here this year........
and some are just popping out of the ground

Old fashions or historics in most flowers are my favorites as they are very hardy.....But will take new/er ones as they are more flashy/showy.
If you would have a mind at peace, a heart that cannot harden, go find a door that opens wide upon a lovely garden.

here is the pic of what it looks like up the tulip tree at the top.......about 80 feet. Someone else took this pic. they hope to make my tulip tree a heritage tree very soon and grown the seeds that I am donating back to conservation around my area..... It takes 50 years for this tree to make a viable seed from the pod......

Thumb of 2015-06-17/patweppler/7c917e

and here is the flower at the top.........blooming down the tree possibly will be a couple more weeks before the flowers are at eye level to see them.....

Thumb of 2015-06-17/patweppler/77b4da

the flowers are so pretty and huge huge and look like paper......almost like someone just went and put the flower at the top the tree that they made........instead of the real flower..... perfect shape and so on. My tree is a species but there are a number of hybrids out there so that is what makes the seed and tree so unqiue here and that the tree produces male and female flowers and they get pollinated by the bees..... Very similar in some ways to the Regale Lily

Likely will know by Monday at 10am if they are making this a heritage tree here....... Sounds like they will for sure...... The conservation authority can have the seeds once the fruit on the tree that holds the seeds is ready.
there are so many hybrids of the tulip tree here but this one is a species ........that was identified by the age and the way the flowers are colored and so on........ also the hybrids can not reproduce and the species can.............
this is the only species tree known for a long way away from me.............so the seeds for conservation are important.......

today spent most of the day dealing with arborists and also with a big nursery head that mastered in forestry and so on....

tons of interest, the tree goes into the local paper next Wednesday and if it is a heritage tree it goes on the TV .
pretty cool

I will pass and not be as important as my tree is............

the tree is approx. 80 years and can live well over 250 years..........right now it is bloom from the top to the bottom
and it is really known as a lily tree..............
