Clematis/Rose Combinations

Clematises and roses are ideal companions. They grow well in the same types of locations, thrive in the same types of soil, require the same amount of watering, and respond equally well to the same fertilizers.

Thanks for a great design idea with inspiring photos! I can grow clematis, but I'm finally trying my hand at roses other than knock-outs LOL. I have 3 shrub roses, little plants that I put in last year, and I'm going to make sure each one gets a clematis buddy. I have a 'Rugochi' in a gallon pot, ready to plant out... 'Sharifa Asma' will be its new best friend!

Rooguchi and Sharifa Asma will look fabulous together, Jill. Great idea!

They are beautiful, aren't they, Jasmin? Most of them aren't my photos, so I can agree without any embarrassment. Big Grin

Really enjoyed your article! Very inspiring! Somehow my rose /clematis combos have not worked out too well but I am working on a yellow knockout and Daniel Deronda. I like the idea of having a few that bloom at different times to extend the season

That sounds great, Anna. I love yellow and purple together.

I like the season extension idea too. I want to start grouping two or three clematises around a single rose.

Wonderful article! Hurray!
I have about a dozen clematis planted with roses, I still have many more to plant. Need to try and get more combo shots.
I have a purple Polish Spirit planted with my orange Westerland rose, now that's a strong combo!

Thanks, Sue. The Polish Spirit/Westerland combo sounds dramatic! I have a lot that don't strive for contrast at all. I have four Josephines, for instance, and every single one is planted next to a variety of pink-blend roses.

Great suggestions, Zuzu and Sue!
Several of my lilacs have 'Betty Corning' clematis winding through them. I have a 5' tall deciduous magnolia (can't recall the name, sorry) that blooms white, so I planted a double white clematis next to it. Some years, they bloom together. Most years, the clematis acts as a season extender for the magnolia. I have a new orange climbing rose, 'Above All', that needs a purple clematis, so I think I'll plant a 'Polish Spirit' with it. I wonder what it would look like with a bright pink clematis, though? Wild?

'Polish Spirit' is one of my favorites -- my neighbor has it by her front porch -- and such a dependable bloomer!

I changed my prize request to floribunda rose 'Julia Child' because I can just see those butter-yellow roses with a blue/violet clematis...

'Rooguchi' should stay small and scramble around nicely with 'Sharifa' -- I think it's supposed to be a relatively compact rosebush.

Seems like you might overwhelm a rose by planting 3 clems around it... but I'm thinking that way bec. I just chopped back 2/3 of a C. montana rubra that had taken over a second trellis (out-competing a young climbing hydrangea) as well as engulfing my 'Zeph. D.' (I'm not even going to try spelling that one from memory LOL).

Orange and pink might work for some people, Cindi, but definitely not all people. Big Grin

Jill, that's exactly why I advised against using a montana in any pairing. The montana is always going to engulf a rose.

Rooguchi is great because it can be grown vertically or horizontally. I bet yours looks really good climbing up Aloha, Sue.

Oh I love that combination!
I have a bed with 3 Fourth of July roses, each with a trellis with a dark purple clematis. I can't seem to get the rose and clematis to grow together ---is that rose just too stiff to train to a trellis?

I don't grow it so know nothing about it. Shrug!

Aloha is almost done for this flush.
