Is it possible to ship to Europe form the USA?

I've browsed visited several online nurseries and they all state in their info that they don't :-(
Is it not allowed to ship plants overseas, is it too expensive or is the risk that the plants won't survive a (possibly very) long voyage the reason?

It really has nothing to do with time-of-transit. One needs special certification permits to ship overseas (and to HI). Also, shipping internationally is very expensive. I recently had a Canadian lady who wanted to purchase some of my cork slabs. She even paid for them up-front. I would not need a permit to ship cork to Canada but I warned her that shipping might be ridiculous. Shipping to the West Coast and Alaska might cost $15-$20 for 10 lb. box. I found out that the same box shipped to Canada was going to cost approximately $50! I refunded her money.

The problem is the EU import requirements, which appear to have just got worse, see the following (note daylily - Hemerocallis - is on the list):

There are people who hybridize and sell modern daylilies in Europe, you might try contacting these European organizations listed by the American Hemerocallis Society.

I don't know if the Xylella issue also applies to daylilies from Canada so that might be a possibility to look into if you want to buy direct from North America, there are several Canadian daylily hybridizers. I don't know what the situation is with irises but I don't see them listed on the Xylella list above.

I wouldn't mind paying high p&p for top plants, but if the Dutch customs intercepts them and throws them into the shredder,
that would not only be a waste of money, but of wonderful plants as well ...

I'll just have to drool over all the American nursery catalogs and try to find some of those beauties here in Europe

Just a small further suggestion, if you have the patience to grow them, you could still legally import seeds of daylilies. Not sure about the iris though.

I find it ironic that we import so very many plants and especially flower bulbs from your country, and yet you can't import any the other way.

Europeans are very wisely protecting their own businesses from overseas competition and diseases.

well, I understand that Europe doesn't want me to import plants which may be infected with the Xylella bacterium...
But how many of you have problems with Xylella?? My guess is none..

Oh well, things are the way they are.
I've subscribed to the Lily Auction and am going to buy some seeds!

My own plants are still very young (bought them this April!) and, although some of them are growing flowerbranches (you call those 'scapes'?), I want them putting their energy in growing more fans this year instead of pods

My only problem is going to be space...
Where to put all those seedlings I'm going to grow??

It's not that it would impact European Hemerocallis but that infected (and not necessarily symptomatic) host plants pose a serious risk to agriculture, e.g. olives, citrus, grapes, almond, peach, plum and also ornamentals like oak, sycamore and oleander because insects feeding on an infected plant can then transmit the bacterium to other plants. From a purely daylily perspective, we now have, for example, daylily rust, daylily leafminer and daylily gall midge in North America that have somehow slipped past phytosanitary requirements from other country/ies in the last fifteen years.

Lots of us have that problem, Mayo. We love to grow from seedlings but then are faced with the dilemma of finding space for them as they grow. These pictures are a few years old but my orchid growing addiction has not changed. Well, maybe its now worse. These are just my seedlings. I like to experiment, so one side of the greenhouse had seedlings growing under natural and LED lighting and the other side they were grown just with natural light.

Yes, I understand that you ask for plants from the USA and I can understand that you have been inspired by all the wonderful pictures here, but have looked at this:

Bourdillon isn't completely translated to English which may or may not be a problem to you, but anyway worth a look, if you haven't already seen them.

Also http://www.eurohosta.com/hemer... have some interesting varieties as well ranging from very, very cheap to more expensive (although they seem to be sold out for this year) and perhaps more in line of what you are looking for.

Personally I'm trying to narrow down my order to Cayeux . Very, very difficult.
Also of course it is time to order some Dutch bulbs as well

I did order some nice DL's from EuroHosta! They are all the way over in Slowakije (don't know the english name for that... shame on me! ), but the plants arrived very fast!
They were indeed very cheap and the plants looked great when they arrived
My French isn't too good, but I will check out the other websites, thank you for the links!

How is growing DL's over there? You have warm summers, but very cold (and long?) winters I suppose?

Good to hear that you had such nice experiences dealing with Eurohosta
Dragracing sounds dangerous, but exiting!!! Yes, Mantorp Parc is correct but it's spelled Mantorp Park.

Daylilies are very hardy so many can be grown in almost all of Sweden, but probably one should be careful with evergreens in the north. Also some daylily cultivars don't develop their edge colour in a normal fashion, because of the lack of heat in our summers. That said I'm not a huge daylily grower, although I really love the ones I have. I have very sandy soil (8 meters of pure sand and the ground water is at this depth also) so I must limit the number of thirsty plants a bit as it can be very dry here in summer.

Winters here in the south are often very long, but actually not necessarily very cold, although they can be. Certainly they are a lot colder than your winters. Usually there is a freeze-thaw cycle and this is what kills the majority of plants. Summer are usually quite cold at least compared to continental Europe or large parts of the USA, but here in this micro climate in the forest where I live we usually have a reasonably long frost free season.

Many thanks for the kind offer to help with the bulbs , but it works exemplary to order directly from for instance Eurobulb or Fluwel and I have done so many times the last few years. I do love the selection and the low prices compared to Swedish shops!

Didn't know about happygarden, so bookmarked that one. Looks interesting!

If I were you I'd definitely check out Cayeux next year

Oh and don't give up, the best of the American cultivars are sure to be available here in Europe, although it could take some time.

Now back to trying to narrow down that wish list from Cayeux. Not sure how large part of the kitchen garden that is okay to transform to an iris nursery bed

There is also a very nice fellow, Loic Tasquier in Gendt, who hybridizes irises. He has a facebook page and posts photos of some lovely irises.
