Just to document how my very first Caladiums fare here in our Central Valley heat. These were my raffle prize from our ATP raffle. Big Grin I gave some bulbs to my friends, don't know if they had anything show up yet.

The box of goodies from Caladium Bulbs 4 Less:
Thumb of 2015-06-19/tarev/399c81

Planted the bulbs in April 2015:
Batch 1 - April 2, 2015

Batch 2- April 16, 2015

When I asked here in ATP their planting experience with these bulbs, everyone said it needs high temps and those here in the Pacific side, says it is rather slow..so I moved the containers temporarily in the path of direct sun, as much sun as it can get. Late April and the whole month of May was rather cool this year, so the bulbs where just doing nothing, had to peek several times just to see if they are still firm.

In late May, I moved the containers to part sun/shade, since one container from batch 1 has started to show something poking from the soil.

As June came, so with the higher temps of 90F and higher, finally saw one tiny leaf from one of batch 1 containers show up:
June 1

Temps rising, finally got that horrid 105F heat wave on June 8, after that, some more new leaves starting to poke:

Today 19June, from batch 2: two little leaves nicely formed, and one bigger one slowly unfurling
Thumb of 2015-06-19/tarev/e0ccf7

Batch 1, still that one tiny leaf fully formed, some more new ones finally poking:

Going to update this thread as it goes..at least something nice growing in this onerous heat wave days. I kept on inspecting the plants especially at night, afraid some opportunistic slug or snail might take advantage. I did apply some coffee grounds in these containers too, so far, no attackers has come..woohoo! I have been misting the leaves, following the cue with my croton plants that really enjoys getting misted. I am just glad these plants have not yet croaked with this intense dry heat we are having.

I'm going to follow this with interest. I tried them once in shade. Some came up and looked good, but only one returned the following year. I never had a problem with snails, but that avocado tree has grown, and not much can grow under it.

Oh cool! I will have company watching Smiling

So, just interesting to see now that some comes out smaller leaves, others like a big leaf right away. I wonder how long it will last our dry heat..for sure if it is humid heat it will be like weeds.

Still waiting for two containers to show some sign of life..waiting game continues.

I've grown caladiums before, so they can take the heat. (They were from Happiness Farms in Florida.) I've never had them return for a second year, even when I dug up the corms and kept them indoors. That's cool that you won a raffle. I haven't attempted because I don't have room for much of anything new. I do have a pot in which I'd like to put an Echinacea but I'll wait until spring to get one.

Yes, I think our Cali oven heat is really okay with them, just stepping up the misting now, just so lousy humidity as day progresses. Now that is my fear when the cooler temps come. So will really be more attentive to it when colder conditions return, it certainly will not survive that here, so will treat it like my sleeping Plumies and Adeniums come winter time, hidden safely indoors.

Trying to experiment now how much direct sun can these leaves take. I have this window of direct sun from 11 am to 2pm, then after that all shade again.

I'm watching too. Going to give some a go but was worried about the sun, so this will help me out a lot. The direct sun will be from noon to 3 pm where I would like to plant. I tip my hat to you.

I caved in! Returned the container to its old part shade spot, one of the leaves seems going lanky ready to flop, so I gave it a sip of water too. Seems the ones with more white colors are able to take the direct sun, but the ones with more green hates it...okay back to part shade. Then, I placed the slowest not performing container into the direct sun area, maybe it needs more heat at soil level to awaken the tubers.

Back to experimenting locations for my caladiums, have moved one container on the low brick fence, alongside my agapanthus. Seeing it at eye level, is really nice, a good contrast to the strap-like leaves of the agapanthus. I also watered this container very well today, we are expecting 106F later.
At 7:29 am, still in shade:

At 7:57 am, with the sun from the east, I like the way the light casts some light on that one green leaf with red variegation, seems to be on a cool glow:

At 8:39am - a little more east sun, I love the effect so far.
