Sheesh, are things ever going to get easier?
Now that I have my drainage problems under control, the pests have started! Thumbs down

While adding grit to a few container semps, I noticed the earwigs scramble out from under the plant when I added the grit. Absolutely despise those insects!

Pill bugs living deeper in the roots. Noticed them while repoting a semp. There were even little, tiny baby pill bugs! Ewwwww!

And, the slugs have developed a real fondness for my heuffs. Hey, I know my slugs don't compare with the slugs I saw in Seattle, but they do a lot of damage! Crying

What can I apply that will destroy the pests without damaging my semps?

I'm not trying to spend a lot of cash, but I'll do whatever is necessary to save my plants!

I tried the beer traps, it did not work for me. I finally got the Sluggo Slug/Snail Bait, the one that is safe around children and pets. That did the trick. There is a routine on proper use of the bait, it's all about timing. But anytime is a good time to get rid of them.

I ended up using diatamatious (sp?) earth. Great stuff!
I sprinkled it around the base of the pots, in the area of concern.
Haven't seen anything since.

I did get some insectacidal soap in case. Hopefully I won't need it.

I know ther're a problem along the E. coast. When we lived in Ocean City, Nj, we would hand pick them from our plants by the hundreds.
Here in the boonies of WV, were catching them in traps and hand picking by the thousands!

Yeah, I've seen those slugs you PNW folks have, I was shocked when I saw the size! Yikes!
These little monsters turn an XL Canna leaf into lace in a very short time.
I'm so glad they don't like semps!

At least our slugs are relatively easy to control.

Slug solution?? Strong coffee diluted half & half with water. Spray everywhere (plant and soil). As the slugs travel over it they take up the caffeine through their pseudopod. It gives them heart attacks within 72 hours and will kill plus or minus 80% with the first application. Thanks to the University of a for this miracle solution to a huge gardening problem.

Hi Kate, so good to see you. And love your slug solutions. Which university was it that gave that information?

Yes, I use coffee for slugs and snails all season long - as needed. DE works, but I think the heart attack is more humane than slicing them to ribbons - which is what the DE does. Smiling

@LabourofLove
Kate, I wonder if it would work to sprinkle used coffee grounds around the plants?

Also, any of you having problems with mealy bugs, here are some proven methods of controlling them.

The top recommendations are bonide granules mixed in the soil, rubbing alcohol spray and Botanigard, it's a beneficial bacteria that's applied as a spray. Not all together but as different modes of attack.
For hardcore killing the recommendation is 3 different chemicals;
Thiamethoxam
Dinotefurnan
Immidacloprid (bonide)

Neem drench seemed to be the most effective against root aphids, but that could have been timing too?
