Let's see your beautiful plants! 'Red Sister' is in a good mood today, outside in the summer air for a while now. (This one really jumps in size when it goes through a doorway from outside to inside.)

Here's the view of 2 of my cordyline from inside behind my computer desk chair. I have several more in flower beds.

I thought more people had some kind of Ti plant.

The label that came with this gave 'Crimson Cordylini' from Bush Branch Farms. It said 'perennial' 'full sun', but I've always treated it as a tender tropical - dappled shade and lots of water. I'm pretty sure it's a Cordyline. Maybe 'Crimson Star'. I've never been positive, so I have basically considered it an unknown plant. It's been an easy plant to care for and is 4-5 times larger than the 8-10" plant I bought. I just wish the grasshoppers didn't like it.

I've always kept mine in the shade too, just a little early AM or late PM sun. Inside for winter.

@tiffany i have to really protect the ones in the ground in a freeze. They are tropical and hate to be cold. But they do love being outside in the humid summers. The ones in that ate in the first view are in pots and go into the greenhouse. They don't love it in there, and i have to coddle them i.e. put them closest to the heater, but they bounce back each year. Here is my $1 marginata Lowe's find from a few years back. It never took "center stage" in my yard. Maybe it's time for its Coming Out party?

TY. I misinterpreted your comment to mean that they were out there permanently. I've confused people also, talking about putting stuff in the ground for temporary summer vacation too (to be dug up & brought inside for winter.) Definitely coddled. TY for the added info!

I do have 3 that are permanently in the ground. The rest are in pots. The pots go into the greenhouse. The in-ground ones get covered well. They look bad for a time but bounce back each year.

Cheryl, that view out your window is a beautiful tropical view! Love that big D. marginata of yours too. I meant to dig up a big D. marginata 'Tricolor' before we sold our old house this past March and forgot but I still have a couple of small plants.

Donald, your gorgeous Cordyline reminds me somewhat of Red Star Cordyline. I used to have two that I bought a few years ago for combination containers, only one small one remains and it doesn't look too good. This photo is from four or five years ago, it was lost to a winter freeze:

Do they ever bloom for anyone? When I was searching to identify it, I thought 'Red Star' looked like a good match. At first I leaned toward 'Crimson Star' because of the name on the tag it came with, but using Google to search I think 'Red Star' is more likely. 'Crimson Star' isn't in the ATP database, but a Google search indicates it's more clumpy and probably a hybrid Cordyline. It would be easy to say Cordyline was misspelled as Cordylini. It's worth noting that these plants were sold again two years running using the same tag name of 'Crimson Cordylini' . You'd think if they found it was misspelled they would have corrected it.

Donald, when googling I did find a cultivar named Crimson Star ... it just hasn't been added to our database yet. I will submit a proposal to add it.

The Red Sisters do bloom a spikey pink bloom. But never seen the maginata bloom?

My 'Red Sister' bloomed once (so far, anyway.) I put pics in the DB, and a couple other people have added bloom pics also.

LOL on the blooms. I was just thinking out loud there. Wondering more what the effect of blooming would have on the plant. Would it branch, sucker, die or what. Sort of like when my Codiaeum variegatum 'Petra' bloomed last winter. I didn't know what to expect from that growing point. I generally assume most plants will bloom under the right circumstances unless they are true ferns.

Speaking of the Croton. There are a lot of photos posted to 'Croton' in the database that I think should probably be moved to Codiaeum. It doesn't seem to be cross referenced. There isn't any info for 'Croton' except the name. I guess I should go back to the entry and see where to inquire about that? There are some really nice photos hanging out there, though.

Donald, I went to the database and typed Croton into the search box and then clicked on "View all plants in the Genus Croton". I see that Codiaeum variegatum shows up on page 20: http://garden.org/plants/brows... It is confusing to see a Codiaeum listed in the Croton Genus but I'm thinking it shows up in the list because it has synonyms of Croton johannis and Croton angustissimus. That way if someone were looking for C. johannis or C. angustissimus it would take them to the correct plant.

Yes, you're right, Lin. The Codiaeum in the Croton species listings is there because it includes a Croton synonym.

Donald's concerns about the "Croton" photos that actually are Codiaeum photos have been addressed. The photos are now identified correctly.

I just purchased a Ti Color plant from Lowe's and it really looks nothing like yours... It does however have green and white verigatered leaves with very dark maginata underneath, also closes up at night like a Prayer Plant... It is more like a bush.. ATM I have it outside protected by a shade from the sun..I looked it up and said it was a ginger plant, and is a inside plant.. but can be an outdoor plant under the right conditions... I live in southern Louisiana where winters aren't severe... Will try and send pics soon..
