I’ve been collecting Daylilies for around 15 years. In all that time, my beds were just put in, never thinned out, just more beds added to accommodate what for a while, was an addiction. In the past few years, the deer have found my beds and decided they were a smorgasbord just for them, no matter what I've tried, the game warden thinks that we should fence each daylily bed in 8 foot fence. That's not possible, and not something I want to do anyway. I’ve seen very, very few blooms, and have gotten so used to not seeing the blooms, I don’t know what the point is anymore. We stopped weeding the beds because as you all know, it is hard work and it just made it easier for the deer.
Since I started collecting, I’ve also developed some medical issues that keep me from doing much outside, hubby is a lot older, my boys are grown and working and there’s no way I can keep up with all of this. So, I’ve decided I’m only going to keep about 50 of my most favorite ones, move them to an area very close to the house, and the rest have got to go. I thought this might be the best way to do that.
They all are named daylilies, none of my own seedlings, but unfortunately, tags have heaved, been dug out by chickens, dogs, cats, and anything else you can think of, so, for the purposes of this sale, you are buying unknown daylilies.
What I’m doing right now, is seeing if there is any interest. I’ll start with a bed that is probably 95% daylilies that came from Maryott’s gardens, and that includes a lot of Maryott’s intros from the early to mid 2000's . That will help with identification, somewhat. I’m going to sell them for a -dollar each, but in groups of 25. So, 25 fans for 25.00. Shipping will be whatever the cost to ship from me to you. After I ship a few, I’ll have more of an idea on weight, but I’m guessing around 5 pounds per box from my zip 45120.
Some of the fans are small, some are bigger, but the fans here have never been huge like you get from the growers in the south or warm weather most of the year states. They just don’t do that here, plus, this bed is now in almost complete shade. It wasn’t when it was started, but is now, so that makes the fans smaller as well. But, hey, they’re a dollar.
I collected spiders, eyed daylilies and ruffled edges. I’ve never been a fan of doubles or minis, so I have very, very few of either.
No guarantees that there won’t be duplicates, though I will do my best to make sure that you get good variety of plants.
There have been no chemicals or anything else sprayed on them, no fertilizer either. The leaves and roots will be trimmed to maximize space and minimize weight.
If anyone is in the Cincinnati area and wants to buy and dig the whole bed plus a bunch more…. I’ll make you a deal.
I will say that I've never in my life had a ditchlily, and I do not own a single ugly daylily, though I do realize that these are now "old" daylilies... so there may not be interest at all... that's why I'm posting. So… right now, I’m just checking for interest. If there’s enough, I’ll make it a go... My goal is for that entire bed to go... so we'll see.
