I’ve been collecting Daylilies for around 15 years. In all that time, my beds were just put in, never thinned out, just more beds added to accommodate what for a while, was an addiction. In the past few years, the deer have found my beds and decided they were a smorgasbord just for them, no matter what I've tried, the game warden thinks that we should fence each daylily bed in 8 foot fence. That's not possible, and not something I want to do anyway. I’ve seen very, very few blooms, and have gotten so used to not seeing the blooms, I don’t know what the point is anymore. We stopped weeding the beds because as you all know, it is hard work and it just made it easier for the deer.

Since I started collecting, I’ve also developed some medical issues that keep me from doing much outside, hubby is a lot older, my boys are grown and working and there’s no way I can keep up with all of this. So, I’ve decided I’m only going to keep about 50 of my most favorite ones, move them to an area very close to the house, and the rest have got to go. I thought this might be the best way to do that.

They all are named daylilies, none of my own seedlings, but unfortunately, tags have heaved, been dug out by chickens, dogs, cats, and anything else you can think of, so, for the purposes of this sale, you are buying unknown daylilies.

What I’m doing right now, is seeing if there is any interest. I’ll start with a bed that is probably 95% daylilies that came from Maryott’s gardens, and that includes a lot of Maryott’s intros from the early to mid 2000's . That will help with identification, somewhat. I’m going to sell them for a -dollar each, but in groups of 25. So, 25 fans for 25.00. Shipping will be whatever the cost to ship from me to you. After I ship a few, I’ll have more of an idea on weight, but I’m guessing around 5 pounds per box from my zip 45120.

Some of the fans are small, some are bigger, but the fans here have never been huge like you get from the growers in the south or warm weather most of the year states. They just don’t do that here, plus, this bed is now in almost complete shade. It wasn’t when it was started, but is now, so that makes the fans smaller as well. But, hey, they’re a dollar.

I collected spiders, eyed daylilies and ruffled edges. I’ve never been a fan of doubles or minis, so I have very, very few of either.

No guarantees that there won’t be duplicates, though I will do my best to make sure that you get good variety of plants.

There have been no chemicals or anything else sprayed on them, no fertilizer either. The leaves and roots will be trimmed to maximize space and minimize weight.

If anyone is in the Cincinnati area and wants to buy and dig the whole bed plus a bunch more…. I’ll make you a deal.

I will say that I've never in my life had a ditchlily, and I do not own a single ugly daylily, though I do realize that these are now "old" daylilies... so there may not be interest at all... that's why I'm posting. So… right now, I’m just checking for interest. If there’s enough, I’ll make it a go... My goal is for that entire bed to go... so we'll see.

Here are a few photos, they're a few years old, from when I actually got to see blooms. :(

This is part of the bed that will be dug.

Melissa, since these are unnamed daylilies, will you be choosing which ones to put in the box?

Can we request specific colors or bloom types?

I'm interested in the deal, and depending on the weather and the better half, I might be able to come over and help you thin some things out.

I would like a box of 25 fans for 25.00 but could it be mailed to get somewhere by the 18th? want to send some to my mothers and I will be there the 18th to plant them.
Might be able to get a large flat rate box filled with 25 single fans if not let me know "tree mail me"

I am very interested. My neighbor might be interested also. How many fit in a shipping box? I'll take a box of them. I am starting a new garden on a budget, so I am always looking for good prices on quality plants.

I have deer also. Don't you hate it when they eat your lily buds! You look forward to flowers all year then "munch". I make my own "bambi-be-gone" spray. It works if you spray it once a week and after every rain (every day this week...arghh). I use eggs, milk, garlic (crushed or powder) , thyme (essential oil or infusion of dry thyme) and hot pepper sauce. Neighbors have great results with the commercial plantskyd, but that gets very pricey if you have lots of plants!

It would be fun to plant some random DLs around and see what I get! I do like to plant out bigger plants when I can, though... would you consider doing double fans or clumps? Can you keep each variety separate as you dig, so that it's possible to order multiple fans of the same (unknown, I realize) variety? I'm not trying to add to the work of this endeavor, just seeing what the possibilities are.

I've got a couple other group buys going for this fall, for our local (mid-atlantic) group, so it's possible we could get a bunch of interest from folks going to our fall plant swap, and we could put together a bigger purchase that way.
We're all learners, doers, teachers.

I'll answer backward, Jill, yes, if you want more than 2 of a variety, I can do that, I'll just tie the fans together that go with that particular clump, or if you end up wanting that many, just keep them together, get a big enough order together, I might just have to deliver them! LOL.

Andi, I've never tried a home made spray... I'll have to do that with what I have left, but, I've made up my mind that we have to downsize, there's no way we can keep up with it any more, and honestly, I'd rather just have my favorite plants, and still be able to dab pollen and see what I get... I got to where I loved that more than buying new daylilies...(which was a good thing) but I don't even get to see those blooms anymore! Sad

I don't know for sure how many are going to fit in a box, the boxes haven't come yet. I'm going to have to go tomorrow and get a few boxes, and I will see, I dug 50 yesterday to get an idea. (they're going to one of my nieces)

By the 18th of July? That shouldn't be a problem.

SS gardener, I can't see the blooms on the flowers, so I can't tell what color is what. Depending on how many I have to dig, I will dig them up and lay them to the side, then I will take a double fan from each dug clump to make the 25. I can't promise colors because I can't see what is what now, and haven't been able to for a few years. They've multiplied and there could always be a rogue seedling in there I suppose too.

Paul, let me know. Looks like you're close to Sparta which is where my entire family will be in a few weeks. ;)

Okay, I will get a few boxes tomorrow so I will have a better idea of how many are going to fit in which size box.

As soon as I get that figured out, we can say it's a "go" I'll start "taking orders" this week, and dig this weekend, or sooner, depending on weather and appointments this week, but I'd say the majority I'll do on the weekend when I have a couple of helpers, then ship on Monday mornings. When that bed is gone, I'll start on another.

Hubby said to me today, "Well, you could keep one or two from each one, you know." I said, yeah, then 10 years from now we'll have the same amount we have now, or more, and another 10 years on both of us.... I don't think so.

Just don't do what I did and plant the individual fans too close together! They all form clumps, then you can't tell what fan belongs to what clump when there are no flowers!

I'm interested.

In a few weeks I'll be heading down to Mitchell, IN for a couple of days, and then, most likely, Madison again this fall. I could take a shipped box or two, or if there are any left over I can help dig when next I'm down that way. Whichever is easiest. Smiling

Hi Glo, I haven't done anything yet. It's been raining here a lot, and I got a box full of chicks today that I've been tending to.
