So last year all my DLs had thrips. It took me awhile to figure out what was causing bud abort and deformed flowers and it was quite late in the year. This spring I treated them with neem and am now having a much better flower season.

And then I have bud abort again. I checked...yup. Thrips. Can I treat them again now or should I wait until they're done flowering?

I have been removing the spent flowers and putting them in the trash. My Kwanzo and NOID red are toast, though. Not one flower. The others are flowering along happily. Just a dry bud here and there.

Open up the aborts fully to see if there are any small maggots. I had a lot of thrips and thought that was what caused the aborted blooms. But it was this.

Much harder to eradicate.

You can treat thrips any time of year. But any insecticide is best applied early in the growing season. Then applied again additionally through the year. Neem oil is more a preventer than killer and must be applied weekly until the population goes down, then apply every few weeks.
You could also use a systemic insecticide which will kill any insect. So it's best applied very late in the evening so it doesn't kill the bees. Bayer tree and shrub is one which comes in pellets that soak into the soil when watering, and also sold as a liquid which is poured at the base of plants and trees. But the instructions are vague for daylily application, and the product isn't recommended by bayer to use for daylilys. it's a 12 month systemic.

Bayer Advanced which I think is applied every 3 months. That's what I used, sprayed it all over when it was almost dark out. I don't think i applied it very well, as I still see thrips but it's an improvement. But it wont kill whatever thrips are already inside the buds. So it must be applied every 3 months to kill the cycle of the thrips. Soil must be sprayed also. I think also Bayer Rose and flower care kills thrips too.

I follow Brian Reeder's blog and read his notes whenever he posts a new page to his blog site: http://daylilybreeder.blogspot...

He just recently posted a new page and guess what? The article includes his observations concerning thrip damage! But what he wrote made me go, "Ah ha! I should have paid closer attention!"

Two years ago I had some nasty thrip damage. I had noticed that some seedlings in the midst of the area of attack were unaffected by the thrips, but just dismissed it. After reading Brian's article this morning, it has now occurred to me that perhaps those seedlings that were NOT affected by thrips might just be "thrip resistant". I need to pay closer attention, take more extensive notes, and consider possibilities instead of ignoring them. My common sense did not kick in at the time, but I am learning to be much more observant and mindful of what is going on in my garden. Thrip-resistant daylilies are a possibility! Being an organic gardener, that would certainly be the answer to the thrip dilemma for me personally!
