Wild Iris Rows

By Sharon
June 29, 2015

I stood on a little knoll and looked around me. It was like nothing I'd ever seen, acres and acres of color spread out like a treasured old patchwork quilt made of random shapes and sizes. It was pieced together with strips of green and shades of brown that gently covered the rolling hills. It was an iris farm and every plant seemed to be blooming in glorious color!

I stumbled across this same company just a few days ago, and the name has had me giggling ever since! It's good to hear that not only do they have a sense of humor, but also some beautiful irises!

But I do keep wanting to sing their name. Hilarious!

Me too, Woof. But the actual place is even better than the song.

Sharon, the photos brought the sun shining on the irises into my sitting room and the thoughts you shared (especially your desire to climb the highest tree to look) was much appreciated. Thank You!

Big Grin So good to hear from you, Bev. It is a truly gorgeous place and just as I said, random patches of glorious color. Of course it was full of all that sunshine too.

What a great trip that must have been and it looks like the weather was very nice that day. Mary Ann took some lovely photos and I went through them twice to see if I could pick a favorite, but it was impossible. They are all so pretty!

Every time I read 'Wild Iris Rows', I got tongue-tied. And I wasn't even reading out loud Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Thank you, Sharon, for sharing your trip with us!

What a day to remember. Thank you for the guided tour Sharon. And I can see why that last iris was your favorite. The colors lift my spirit and bring a smile to my face.

And this morning we received a message from Greg Hester, the owner of the farm, and that last iris is indeed 'Strange Brew'! That's one I just simply have to have in my garden!!

Thanks! It was a great trip, I wish all of you could have been there.

I have a feeling that they will have a run on "Strange Brew!" It really is striking! Smiling

The yellow of Strange Brew made it glow in the sunlight and the mauve tones made it look warm. With the blues and deep purples around it, that clump reminded me of a burning bush. It was intense, so pretty.

Beautiful pictures. I thought of mom when I looked at these. She loved daylilies and iris flowers. When Mom died I lived there for a short while. The home was mine until an ugly marriage of 38 years got in the way of life. When I moved I took all that I could with me.. They are blooming in a small garden that my son made for me.. I think of her everyday.. I could not get the one thing that I loved. it was a plant that my mom moved from our old farm place Smiling back when I was young. The Rose of Sharon I left behind.. I miss it as it was above the sink and grew tall while I washed dishes I would watch them bloom.. and little bumble bees would go in and out of the blooms. I once caught a Hummingbird, resting on one bloom.. I loved it there..

I remember our neighbor had a Rose of Sharon when I was a child and I was fascinated by it; thought it was one of the loveliest things I'd seen at the time. I was just looking at the entry in our database and there's a chance I could grow one here.

I know it wouldn't be the same as having the original plant that your mom moved, but if you're still in an area where it will grow, perhaps you might like to get a replacement? I know I grow certain plants just because my mom liked them.

Stilllme, I have many many Rose of Sharon plants, brought from the mountains with me. They are a part of my childhood too. If you live where they will grow, I will send you seeds in the fall. Just send me a Treemail and let me know if you would like that. And welcome to ATP!

Woofie, you want to try a few seeds up your way? They are blooming now so seeds shouldn't be a problem a little later.

I would love to try some! I have an expanse of chainlink fence that is crying out for stuff to plant in front of it to help provide a bit more privacy.

I've made a note to save seeds in the fall, Woofie. You might have to remind me again later. When you get this old, saving is one thing, sending is another thing entirely! Smiling

And remembering is a whole 'nother matter! I try to make notes. Heh, but then you have to "remember" to look at them. Hilarious!
