Is this fragrant and how does it handle humidity? We have hummingbirds around I think would like this. We tend to have cool mornings sometimes and lots of humidity though.

We have lots of high humidity here on Long Island and these vines do fabulously. I have not noticed any fragrance.

The Cypress Vine self sows down here, and does great with all kinds of heat and humidity all though 4 months of the Florida sauna we call summer.

Forgot to say, I haven't noticed any fragrance either, but the hummers sure do find it in a hurry so I guess they can smell it from afar.

Any issues with mildew or aphids? Everything I have tried on my arbor has had problems with both, and I do want something for the hummers.

No problems here. And it is very humid on Long Island in the summer.

The Cypress Vine has very fine, airy foliage so it seems as if it wouldn't have trouble drying to prevent mildew. I haven't seen anything like that here either.

Don't remember about the Cardinal Climber as I grew it in Utah years ago. Very dry air there in summer, though.

This plant self seeds, so although It is an annual, but you do not have to replant the next year. Just control where they decide to come up, that is the major problem. I have not noticed a fragrance but the hummingbirds do not care.

I have grown it for years. Have never noticed a problem with it. Have really not noticed any pests to bother it here in West Tennessee. It in itself, can be a pest, as it self seeds and you will always have it, but it is SO beautiful! Just plant it somewhere that you really don't care if it covers that area up. You could just make a small bed with an arch, arbor, trellis or some other support just for it. In no time at all it will cover it and reward you with masses of blooms till frost. I have never noticed fragrance, but strongly feel the hummers are attracted by the brilliant red color, red is all I have. Wish I had some pink & white. But they will devour them!
