Total devastation here in South West England. Scapes formed very early here this year but the gall midge has worked it's havoc on the buds. Almost all my daylilies so far have been affected and I have had to cut down all scapes on John Karl Seager which is not a re-bloomer so I am in a very sad place at the moment Crying

Hilary, my condolences for all the lost blooms Crying

I read that some growers in gall midge affected areas plant some extra early and early blooming daylilies to act as "bait traps" and purposely destroy the buds after the eggs have been laid as a way to reduce the population and spare their later bloomers. The reading suggested they only have 1 generation a year so trapping them in the egg/larvae stage might help. Shrug!

Hi Lisa, I have heard this before. I kept H Outrageous for this purpose. Guess what! Outrageous is the best it has ever been and because so many scaped earlier than usual it is the mid-season bloomers that have been worst hit. The RHS website suggests that a systemic bug killer sprayed on plants in late May to early June may help. I will try this next year

Very sorry to hear that Hilary Sad I can't imagine losing a whole season of blooms.

@shive1 - I almost posted pics from today on June's thread. The year is flying! I took your advice and used my 75-300 lens, but I also had to use my tripod, because I am so unsteady with the heavier lens. I only used one leg of the tripod so I could get into better spots without damaging daylilies. There were some that I just could not get enough space between me and the bloom to get a good dof, but am having so much fun experimenting with the lens and what it can do.

Here are some from today after a short sprinkle and before the deluge that came later:

Drooling Drooling Drooling Drooling all over my keyboard! No favorites here, I love them all!

Hilary - So very sorry to hear about your pest problem. I deal with rust fungus here, but still get blooms. (So I can't complain compared to what you are dealing with.) I hope you find success combating the bugs!!!

Vickie - You are really getting some wonderful shots with that better lens! I hope you are also submitting those photos into the plant database!

Was it you who named Fred's "Lillian's Shadow Dancer" in the naming contest a year or so ago?? Lovely bloom photos!

Thanks, Becky. Yes, Lillian's Shadow Dancer was the one I named in the contest. It is so beautiful!

Ashton, I was hoping it would be Hyperion. It does have a fragrance. Here is a shot from further away with the FFO being on July 1, I wasn't sure if that was the right time for Hyperion to start blooming here and since I just got it last year, it will probably get taller next year.

Teresa - That Grimhild Mahieu is cool! Love those curls!!!

Bedmaker - Nice blooms!

I don't have but a little more than a handful of named daylilies. This is Lavender Stardust that I got from @tgarden711 :
Morning bloom is pink:

Afternoon bloom is lavender:

I happen to love those colors and to get both colors in one bloom ... sure made me smile!!! Big Grin
