I am trying to locate anyone who sells the "Baby Keith" daylily, hybridized by Primos in 1982. If anyone knows or has any strong leads, please help. I haven't so much as found a picture, much less a seller or name of the hybridizer's garden

Thank you!

Thank you. :)

If anyone even recognizes the hybridizer's last name and can tell me the name of the hybridizer's garden or even a city or state where the hybridizer lives, that would be great. Any leads are appreciated!

I saw 50 daylilies registered by Primos on the AHS site, but the last one was in 1986, or somewhere close to that date. The earliest seems to be about 1966. So, that leads me to believe that they are probably no longer actively hybridizing. The majority appear to be named after family members.

Type Primos into the Hybridizer box on the right, and click search. This will take you to all of the ones that the person registered. I didn't see any familiar names, but with so many out there, that isn't surprising.

Sorry, but that is all I could find!

The registration code shows Mrs. A. K. Primos, Jackson, Ms. That is the only information given. If you go to the page linked below on the AHS website it will give you contact info for the AHS officers in Region 14, there is a historian listed who might have some info on Mrs. Primos. By clicking the Mississippi Daylily Societies link at the top of the page you might find a club in that area that may be able to help as well.

Excellent possible lead, Char!!! I hadn't thought of any local clubs in the area last known about the hybridizer. If nothing else, the club could put the word out through their members to see if anyone happens to have it in their garden and can share a fan or two with DogNDaylilies! Thumbs up

@Char, I decided to continue my search in this thread. I'm also going to use this thread to document my progress (so I always know where to go to see what I've found), if that's okay.

As a separate note, you don't happen to be fluent in French or know someone on this site who is, do you? I am trying to find potential leads at the moment by tracking down Primos' other cultivars, and I just happened upon a website a few moments ago that seems to have people discussing Primos's 'Mayola Swan' daylily and where to get it. I plugged the three visible comments into Google translate and they said something about "this cultivar" in it...so I'm pretty sure the comments were related to Mayola Swann, and not daylilies in general....and they were talking about a particular place (in Belgium?) in which to get it. (This is the first place I've found that gives any indication to *anyone* having a Primos cultivar...I'm still looking, though.)

Anyway, long story short, if there's someone who is fluent in French, who could breeze through the comments on the page (link below) and confirm my suspicions that they are talking about where to get Mayola Swann, that *might* be a step in the right direction. It looks like they are saying that "Les Botaniques du Val Douve" had it (but is out?) and

Here is the link: http://www.jardinsdugue.eu/enc...

Edited to add: The French site also lists daylily "Elizabeth Fancher":
http://www.jardinsdugue.eu/enc...
...and Margaret Buchanan: http://www.jardinsdugue.eu/enc...

("Doris Alley" is the name of one of Primos' other daylily cultivars...it is highly likely the person mentioned in this old article from a Jackson, Mississippi article is the Doris Alley for which the cultivar was named for.)

I have not started the 7-day free trial, which is required to view the full article.

Question to research: Who was "Fancher", and why is their last name tied to a few of Primos' introductions?

Interesting note: Elizabeth Fancher daylily was intro'd in 1966, which was the same year the article on Doris Alley was printed. Amethyst Glow (Fancher-Primos intro) was also intro'd in 1966, as was Petite Lass. The only Fancher-Primos intro *not* intro'd in 1966 was 'Pink Slippers', which was intro'd in 1968. Was this a short-lived hybridizing partner? A family member? Her maiden name? (...considering they are the earliest intro/registration dates of all of her daylilies, the maiden name idea is very much a possibility, I would think.)

(Are the dates the registration dates? ....they are what is listed in the AHS database...need to research what the date means, for sure.)

When I click on the French site, Google ask if I want to interpret it, and it does a great job. But other than the title at the top I see no mention of a discussion about daylilies, other than just general info.

The AHS Daylily Journal of Summer 1967 has a short article about Mrs. Primos. She was an AHS Director, and display gardens chairman. No mention of Fancher though.

Eva Griffin - unlikely, but possible connection here: http://uxbridgehorticulturalso...

Governor Bill Waller reference, posted in the Daily Corinthian July 30th, 2014:
"Marvin Thurston Little, 81, of Corinth, peacefully passed away on the evening of Monday, July 28, 2014, at landmark Nursing Home in Booneville. ...The Alcorn County native and long-time, well-respected businessman had a life-long love of people and politics. He spent many years in Washington, D.C. as the personal aide to Senator James O. Eastland. Little served as Colonel Aide De Camp to ...Governor Bill Waller of Mississippi, and Governor John Bell"

...Governor Bill Waller passed in 2011 (http://www.legacy.com/obituari... ), and his wife passed away in 2014. I'm thinking that, in all likelihood, Primos was just honoring Waller and they didn't really know each other, so this likely isn't much of a lead.

Interesting Factoid - potential strong lead?[/b}: There is one (possibly two) restaurants with the name "Primos" in Jackson, Mississippi. Stumbled on this here:
Thumb of 2017-03-21/DogsNDaylilies/fcf2c2
Contact info for Primos Northgate: http://www.sunnymississippi.co...

Contact info for Primos Café in Flowood and Ridgeland, Mississippi: http://www.primoscafe.com/
[b] strong lead?:
restaurant website credits an "Angelo Primos"....could this be the "A.K. Primos" that Mrs. Primos was married to? (....need to re-reference Char's information here)
"Primos Cafe is a Mississippi restaurant tradition started by Angelo "Pop" Primos, a Greek immigrant baker. Started in the 1920's, Primos Cafe has been synonymous with great quality Southern food and friendly restaurant service for almost 90 years.
Today, Don Primos, Pop's grandson, maintains the reputation of excellence under his ownership of the restaurant, and he is committed to meeting his customers' demands for superior quality, freshness and value. Primos Cafe is a fast, casual cafe serving breakfast, lunch and supper six days a week."
[edited to add: Now Primos Café is almost a definite lead, it also lists a contact of "Mary Claire Primos"....another daylily registration for Mildred Primos : http://flowoodchamber.chamberm... )
Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
BINGO!!!!!!!! ....stumbled on this and there are excellent lead opportunities in here!.... (Was this the article Char found? Need to see....credit where credit is due, if so.): http://www.ahsregion14.org/Dix...
Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
- Ethel Smith shown in picture is likely related to Linda Smith (for which Primos named a daylily....daylily parentage was Murrah Miss x Ethel Smith)
- Ethel Smith's No Mistake Plantation has a retreat named Emmaus Retreat Center (info here: http://www.visitmississippi.or... ) but the main website that's listed (www.emmausretreat.net) is no longer up. I found a listing for the Inn being for sale, is it possible that the entire plantation is being sold (or already sold)? Here is the listing: https://www.bedandbreakfast.co... ...I need to research this more.

I'm pretty sure this was the article Char referenced previously: http://www.ahsregion14.org/Dix... (lists Mildred Primos as on the Board of Representatives for Region 14)

On a separate note, I need to research daylily Yazoo Mildred Primos, listed as hybridized by W.H. Smith (another case of female hybridizer listing under husband's name?....there was a 'Sheila Smith' daylily and 'Angie Smith' daylily hybridized by Mildred Primos.) This might be someone that Mildred gave/traded/sold her daylilies with.

@seedfork - Larry, I think you're right. At first, I thought the second comment, translated as this: "Hello
For now, it's the only nursery that I referenced for this variety. There is also the botanical of the Val moat, but they don't seem to have available." was referring to Mayola Swann when he said "this variety", but I think he was referring to a mimosa plant that Andre (username) brought up. Hmm...that site might be a deadend, except that it happens to have two of Primos' varieties in their database, so far, and that seems to be a record, LoL! (garden.org and the Russian site, notwithstanding)

@Sooby - thank you for the lead. Smiling By the way, I don't know if I've asked you yet, but is that Pawprints on My Heart in your avatar?

FB page for No Mistake Plantation (https://www.facebook.com/pg/no... ) suggests that the property went up for sale around November 2016 and is still for sale. I may need to jump on this quickly before potential names/cultivars are lost forever!...

need to research: are there any active garden.org members near Jackson, Mississippi that might visit No Mistake Plantation? (I should call the plantation, first, though, before involving others, if necessary, I think.)

Thanks! I've knocked out a bunch of my highly desired daylilies, but that's one that keeps eluding me. It's not that I can't find anyone who sells it; it's just that, for various reasons, I haven't ended up with it yet. Sticking tongue out

Possible namesake of daylily "Julia Kathleen"?....
Thumb of 2017-03-21/DogsNDaylilies/b2d3a9

lead for daylily "Kap Primos".....likely named for Kenneth "Kap" Primos (III?): http://profiles.superlawyers.c... .....located in Ridgeville, Mississippi
other Ken/Kenneths (possibly also called "Kap?") in the same area: http://www.spokeo.com/Kenneth-... ....hmmm....

Possible Lead for Linda Smith is Blue Rock Gardens (no longer exists?.... http://pheasantgardens.ca/link... ) Linda Smith is too common of a name, I think, to pursue this one.

Another STRONG lead.....BINGO!.....

"Murrah Miss" is likely named for Murrah High School in Jackson, Miss....and there was a Claudia Primos that was an alum in 1968...maybe this could be the same Claudia that daylily "Claudia Long" (possibly her married name) was named for five years later, in 1973?

....I'm almost certain of it after seeing this:

Thumb of 2017-03-21/DogsNDaylilies/9f200d

Mildred had daylilies named Little Witt and Little Mimi (as well as a bunch of other "Little ______"....which could account for the other grandchildren)
