Earlier this year, before the notion of hybridizing bit me, I ordered a daylily seedling available for naming from Chris Darrow at Olallie Gardens. This morning,the first bloom (in my garden) opened up! I'm so excited...and so shocked! It's nowhere near the orange color that was in the picture on the website (http://www.daylilygarden.com/m... ) but I love it anyway!

So, everyone, I give you a first glimpse of "Olallie Keith Stone's Sunset", perhaps the truest-to-color picture of it. (It's been registered with AHS, but isn't on their site yet.) my pretty little red (with a slight hint of orange) daylily!

Thank you! it was my first named cultivar, although if I'd known earlier I was going to be interested in hybridizing, I might have waited...so maybe it's a good thing I didn't know? ;) I am really excited, and the fact that it's redder and not as orange might make it more likely I'll use it in my own crosses...I just have to see how's colorfast it is first.

Thank you, all! This is the first chance I've had to post this, but this daylily appears to be a bit of a color changer. Notice how it is more orange, which makes the red eye more distinguished. Here are a couple of pictures of it in the evening (two separate evenings) plus a picture of how it curls, which I LOVE!

Many of my daylilies are washed out at the end of a hot day, and the color isn't the same. I think most people have this happen. But, yours still looks good at the end of the day! Wish I could say the same for some of mine!

I suspected that this one was a case of very non-colorfast red in the petals (just colorfast in the eye, I suppose). It's amazing how the red bleached out so much that the edges turned white! Maybe I need to capitalize on this and breed it to some near-whites and see if I can get them to bleach out into a true white mid-day, hehe!

It's worth a shot! I'm not sure that it works that way, but I would give it a try! It would be really interesting to have a deep colored daylily in the morning, and have it turn white in the afternoon! I actually love some of mine at the end of the day, when they are sunburned and drained of the color that they had when they opened. Kind of gives the garden a totally different look. Not all of them look good at all by the end of a hot day, but others change just enough to where I really love them in all of their faded glory!
