I've been researching Jim's pick on ATP and AHS's databases, but I was hoping I could get input from those of you that actually have it. Apparently I saw it recently at a daylily garden and wrote down that it was fragrant (I was sniff-checking flowers), but no one online or in the databases (ATP and AHS) mention it is fragrant. Blinking

Does anyone have this blooming right now and could you sniff-check it for me?

I also don't remember the color. It must not have been amazing, I guess, but then, I'm not huge into pastels. (I'm looking at crossing this for sentimental/name-specific reasons.) Can those of you who have this--especially northern gardeners!--confirm if this is a pink/tangerine/cream flower, or just dark peach? Confused

Mine is not in bloom yet, but I will keep it in mind when it does.

I have noticed lots of dl are fragrant and not listed in the db. I think that many people just overlook it altogether, so just because the db does not say it is fragrant- really has no merit at all. The only thing it is good for is, if it DOES say a dl is fragrant, then you know. Jim's Pick, I grew several years ago, don't remember if its scented, but did think it was a good performer and was pretty. I don't like pastels much, but I remember liking it.

You sound like me, I prefer more saturated colors, too...deep purples, dark reds, rich reds, bright oranges...or as white as white gets.

I ended up buying Jim's Pick today...it does have a fragrance and it's very beautiful for a pastel. There is something about the polychrome coloring...

Another question about Jim's Pick:

Have any of you found this a very difficult pod parent and/or pollen parent?

It doesn't seem to like reproducing in my garden. It has been a difficult pod/pollen parent for me and, although not ALL of the pods have aborted, I'm certainly not holding my breath on the ones that remain.

Is it really hot where you are currently? If so, the temps may have something to do with the failure to set pods with viable seeds.

Good thought. It has only been really hot the last day or two. Prior to that, it was very mild, but it was also rainy, so that could be the issue, too.

Jim's Pick is actually THE daylily that got me into daylilies. I ordered it from Homestead Farms years ago and have it growing in four places in my yard. It was most likely the first plant I hybridized with along with Big Smile. It sets pods easily, but I can't recall if I ever used it as a pollen parent. The photo I've included was taken today with no photo editing.

The clump I have growing near the sidewalk/road does not appear fragrant. However, the plant I have growing alongside my small garden pond, which is in more of enclosed area, I find it to be easily fragrant. It might depend on location, the clump near the road, exposed to car fumes every four seconds. It is worth growing, the colors can be amazing with the right lighting/backdrop.

Here's a hint if you want to use it as a pod parent and are having trouble setting pods: Don't hybridize in temps near 85 degrees or above. *Remove the pistil from another flower (can be another cultivar), and squeeze the fluid onto the stigma of the flower you want to put pollen on. Then dab your pollen. I have found this to be helpful for plants that are hard to set pods on, but I've not had trouble with Jim's Pick. Any questions, let me know, and I hope this helps!

Sandi, what an interesting idea! I've never heard that advice before--thank you! Thumbs up I am finding Jim's Pick to be a difficult pod parent and a somewhat difficult pollen parent, mostly because Jim's Pick's pollen seems to get soggier and not dry out as fast as other pollen after a rain or watering. It's strange. I will try your advice about the pistil juice from another flower though because Jim blooms when he wants to bloom, and it's always either wet or HOT. Sad But if a bit of pistil juice will make him behave more, that's what I'll do!

I hadn't heard that idea either.

Thanks, Sandi for that suggestion to set pods on a stubborn cultivar. I will definitely remember it!

Jim's pick is blooming now in my garden. Though wasn't open today. I'll do a sniff test next time one is open. Love the colors. Sometimes it's more pastel and other times the colors seem more saturated. Mine is in an area where it gets late day shade, so that might be why? I've never tried pollinating it, so can't comment on that.

I have to say, when I was researching Jim's Pick online, I didn't think it was that great. Rolling my eyes. I was really just trying to find a daylily that had "Jim" in it and I was leaning toward "Which Way Jim" because that was purple and fell more in line with my hybridizing color scheme. I had a bit of difficulty finding someone who had Which Way Jim in stock, though, and when I saw that a local hybridizer had some with blooms (meaning I could hybridize with it this year instead of next year) of Jim's Pick, I decided to look at it while I was there.

I am very happy I purchased it, it has such beautiful coloring and fragrance. Sandi, I can see why that would be a daylily that would get you into daylilies in the first place, for sure! There really aren't any other daylilies out there quite like it. It has such rich peach and pink coloring with the very distinct, thick, rippled midrib...it's definitely a good flower. I got mine for only $4, too, so it was a great buy all around for me. Hurray!

The AHS database lists only two cultivars with Jim's Pick as a parent. Maybe it's more stubborn than I remember!

Well, I have two blooms on it today, so I better get to hybridizing. I'm going to try the pistol juice trick, though.

Hi. I see it's an older thread but not many pics for it. I grow it in SC and have set many pods on it. The pods have an elongated shape to them and I'd never seen that before. There were lots of seeds too. I'll post a pic of what I'm talking about. It's a very pretty daylily. A friend from way up north sent it to me and I love having it. I'm trying to collect Wild's daylilies, the diploids, as I love his blended colors!

Diana, you should look into getting it this year! I've purchased a bunch of daylilies from Becky Hutchins ('Miss Becky' in Carleton, MI) and I think I got this one from her. If not, I'm almost certain she has it. I am amazed at myself for falling so in love with a pastel bloom, but this one just has so much going for it! I'd recommend purchasing it, if you have the space.
