Just took this one, after a big rain storm this morning. I think it is A. gageana but may be Okinawa Silver. The variegations are amazing.

This one always makes me smile. Maybe because of it's name "Mickey Mouse" or from whom it came. Probably both. It had a hard time starting out but I think this is it's year to shine.

Looks like a lot of lateral veins, I'd guess gaganea, they look great!
Gotta get my hands on some of those!
I think there's a white form and a yellow form...


Really it's like choosing a favorite song, or child... So many great varied qualities, and traits... It's really impossible to choose a fav!

I love it for color and uniqueness, but generally I grow them for size and form.

































Sorry to spam the thread with pics but it just blows me away that all those different colors not only come from one plant, but that each leaf with evolve through each of those colors is just so fun to watch!

Sway, that crazy sport of yours sure does have some amazing colors. Have you been able to successfully propagate it? That being said, it honestly wouldn't be my first choice to grow in my garden, just because at first glance it looks somewhat . . . unwell.

Same reason I don't grow those yellow and bronze-y Heucheras in my daughter's garden. I was putting them in our basket at the nursery, and she said "don't buy those Mum, they look like they're dying". I of course scoffed and said "well they're supposed to be that color" and she said "who would grow those?".

Black Ripples, do they stay this lanky? Should I cut some of them off? Would they root with rooting compound maybe?

I don't think you'd get a leaf cutting to root, Teresa. Wait 'til it puts up a new pup at the base. Maybe move it out to a little more light so the leaves won't be as tall?

Very nice colors Teresa. It looks like you have a few Black Ripple/Puckered Up pups already! Post again with a new leaf or two on the parent plant.

What are the ones that face upward? Newbie here lol. I saw one of those and another that was green but had a red spot in the center of the leaf.

Don't cut it back, unless you insist, it'll only slow the plant down, if it's in enough sun, it'll put out more compact, normal growth.
Cut the leaves off and you remove the energy source! It would likely survive tho.

The first pic is black beauty, it's a sport of illistris, I like it 10x better!
They look so good in person and are just as hardy as illistris is.

I haven't tryied ripples/ puckered up yet, they look pretty good at Brian's place but they've never excited me much...
It's turned into something that bugs me... Brian generates tons of new plants, does a great job selecting plants to grow out, culling is hard if you've never done it, but then the big wigs come up, walk thru the trail gardens and select the plant that THEY think will sell well. That's what determines what plants hit the market.
I've known for a long time that what appeals to me, is rarely what appeals to "the market"
Thus, the plant I drool over, end up composted...
Specifically the year that puckered up/ripples hit the market, I was expecting, hoping.... Really wanting to grow a different selection from the same cross... It was a MUCH better looking plant all round to my eyes, and it's growth habit is unlike any other colo I've seen!
He kept one hanging around for a few years but I couldn't even find it to see how it was doing on my last visit... I assume it's gone forever...
Such a shame that money is the driving force behind everything in our society!
Something's are worth more than just money, and sometimes a (the) dollar, costs us a lot more than face value... Such is life I suppose...

I'm nuts for propagation!
Just assume if it's a plant I like, or even own... I'm trying to make more!
Many of my colocasia reproduce 20:1 on a good year!
I had a konjac make 50 pups a few years back, it's fun to experiment!

I've gone back and forth with that colo, started with one, multiplied it, thought I lost them all... Etc...
I now have 7 that are semi mature.
They are serious runners! Start early, long runners with tight nodes( not sure is stolons have nodes, but the points that make new bulbs...

I've been working on how to best propagate runners... You can just run them round the pot and bury them, it works fine but them you just end up with a cramped pot, and lots of little plants growing in the edge of the pot, these don't do well!
I've also tried laying them in empty pots, that works better but still problematic, moving two plants at the same time can be tough and long runners will still go round the edge... Also I've been trying a different tactic, poking a hold in bottom of a small pot, and sticking the runner up thru the soil, this works great for splitting off the terminal bulb of the runner and getting them started in the center of a fresh pot, or just drop them in ground! No shock, well not much...it's pretty sweet to have plants rooted and ready to trade/sell/plant, at the ready, they basically just sit waiting to be popped off, I love it!
But... That does nothing for the sometimes numerous tiny bulbils trapped in the runner!
So I started sticking the runners up thru paper towel rolls, stuffing the rolls with soil and the if the runner terminates, them stick that last bulb in a little pot! I hope that makes sense, I know it sounds crazy! Just hope you understand the description.




Hopefully the pic helps explain, if your wondering, yes it's a hassle, takes time in a very uncomfortable position, but it's not that bad, I've never been as anal with catching runners as I have with this plant.
I counted around 20 nodes on that one long runner, that runner is over 3' long, it's the first runner from this plant I've actually had terminate, up til now they just run and run and frost gets em before they finish the cycle.
On the other hand, I've had Big Dipper make stolons that terminate and then that bulb run again, then again and again, making a chain of fully intact plants all linked...

My A. lutea pup is chugging along.

A. gageana Albo-variegata pumps out leaf after leaf and still under 18".

Mine's up around 2ft or so now, Evan. But still a very nice size and such pretty leaves!
